How to get into the groove with women.

Ok. So recently I have been getting out more in the LGBT community where I live. The events them selves are interesting and seems they usually get a big turn out.
Problem. I am super shy and have a hard time breaking the ice with people. I have gone to most of these event with a firend who is also new to the scene. Shes my complete opposite. She is not afraid to strike up conversation. I thought she would kinda be a way to meet people. But I think its working aganist me.
Just wondering if perhaps anyone out there can help me out with this....

just go with the flow. when she is talking to people. i am shy also. but i always tell myself i am worth being here too. a friend told me one time that we are all worth 15 dollars. so the most out going person there is worth as much as you are my friend:) enjoy girl

I'm confident and unwary, I usually have a good time at events and parties. How I relate to your story? Well... I'm not a people person, I won't talk to someone and say nice things for the sake of being liked. I won't compliment someone unless I actually mean it. Social butterflies give me the creeps.

I totally understand if you feel awkward and at unease. But I tell you this: not any group of people is your cup of tea. Don't stress about it, you don't have to fit in with the crowd.

What I do is, let's say at a gallery opening... I get a drink and walk around enjoying the exhibition. I listen to the conversation several groups have going on and if I hear something that intrigues me, I join the discussion. It's so much easier to talk about a topic that interests you, expressing your opinion or telling an anecdote becomes a piece of cake when you're attention is entirely captured.
