Kidney Stones Support Group
Kidney Stones are solid crystals of dissolved minerals in urine found inside the kidneys or ureters. They vary in size from as small as a grain of sand to as large as a golf ball. Kidney stones typically leave the body in the urine stream; if they grow relatively large before passing, obstruction of a ureter and distention with urine can cause severe pain most commonly...
My urologists have always told me to drink, drink, drink to STAY hydrated. I would think that in most cases, you would want to drink enough fluids to keep the urine from becoming so concentrated that you form stones in the first place, and that staying hydrated might help prevent them from growing larger, or at least to get them moving and KEEP them moving before they get too large to pass easily.
And once you start passing a stone, building up the pressure behind the stone can help it move along, if it can.
do you or anyone else know when and why a stone will begin to pass?
As far as why a stone actually moves in the first place, I don't know. I know that I had my first kidney stone attack after participating in my first "clogging" (dance) performance--but I don't think there is any kind of causal relationship there! I think maybe they just choose to move because and when you've got better things to do!
My doctor told me mine passed because I was dehydrated. The night before I had one, I did feel different. Eating and drinking dinner was a challenge. I thought it was my neighbors cooking (lol), but I realize now that it was related to how my body was responding to either dehydration or some kind of kidney stone effect.
Perhaps that's what happened to you after your performance. Were you exerting a lot of energy in the weeks before your performance? Were you drinking a lot of water?
Yeah, most of my stones have begun causing problems in the fall or early winter. I'm like a four-year-old who hates to take time out of their busy day to go to the bathroom, so I don't drink enough...dumb, I know! I've also had jobs where I am either traveling or needing to be present with the people I'm working with 100% of the time, so tended to restrict my fluid intake. Now that I'm not working, I do much better at drinking enough.
Love the comment on the dinner! I had been shelling and eating peanuts during the evening prior to the kidney stone pain beginning, so I was very hesitant to eat any more peanuts afterwards. It was probably a good thing that I associated the episode with clogging, as I was never very good at that anyways!
