Hi- I'm from the CP department, I have RSD but right now I'm being tortured by a kidney stone. I'm 44, have had stones (small, not very painful ones) for 20 years. 3 months ago I was taken by ambulance to ER b/c I thought I was dying! Turned out to be a stone and I passed it within minutes of being there, or it passed into bladder.
Thing is, I've never seen one of my stones as I pass them usually at home and rarely seek doctor assistance. I've got meds for my RSD pain and anti nausea meds, so imagine my shock when they told me 3 months ago I had been passing multiple stones at same time on right side.
I figured I was okay for awhile. I travel a lot for work and was supposed to leave for Cancun,Mexico today. But 9 days ago I got ANOTHER stone so bad I needed the ER. They said it was about 5mm and would pass, gave me Flomax and toradol and I already had other pain meds. In fact, the pain meds they gave me in my IV were opiods and they didn't do a THING but this Toradol was a Godsend. I stopped vomiting and was able to calm down a bit.
Anyway, I got terrible diarreah the next day and was sure I'd passed the stone, too. I was okay by Thursday, and drove my son (4) to visit family who live 7 hours away. On the way, it started moving. I stopped at a hotel and thanked God that my son fell asleep and I went through a hellish night, just grateful they sent toradol if I needed it. It beats morphine any day!
So I get to cousin's house and I'm sick again. Not BAD sick, just, tired, low grade fever, pain, etc. Not the deathly pain I'd felt before ER though. We left early from my cousin's b/c I wanted to see my doc on Monday. He couldn't see me till 7pm and I had a 5am flight Tuesday. (Today.) I ended up calling and canceling it all (praying I get deposit back b/c I'm free-lancing) so I was already sad.
The Toradol works well but shouldn't be taken more than 5 days. I went to the ER again wanting to see if stone had moved but the doctor there was very weird. All talk, no answering questions- lots of machismo. He said that my stone wasn't 5mm as thought but 7 mm! He said the pain I felt was going to go on till I passed it and the stone was by the bladder.
It took 8 days to get from midway point to bladder and still couldn't get IN to bladder. So now I have appt with an urologist at 8am but I cannot stop hurting. Or if I don't hurt I have to pee. I don't remember any stones like THIS before. Dr said I'd definitely SEE this stone and they remembered to give me a strainer. But so far it's just a lot of pain if I don't take Toradol and sometimes even if I do. I'm scared of the medication but also, I am in need of it.
So I didn't take my flight today, am stuck at home sick with a grumpy hubby and a tired 4 year old, and they ARE trying. But I have so many questions!
1st- I believe that I passed my stone into the bladder when I vomited the last time in the ER on the 1st visit 3 months ago. So I never was straining or worrying about it. I never saw it, only felt it and it was seen on the CT scan.
Now: what does it feel like for a woman when the stone makes that last push into the bladder? Is it the same pain we feel normally or do the jagged edges make it worse?
My doc said i have a good chance of this stone being one that blocks the opening of bladder. It's how it was shown on the utltrasound yesterday- oddly shaped and measuring weird. IF that happens, how long will it take to get them to do something?
What should I ask the Urologist tomorrow? I see her in about 9 hours. I want the little bugger OUT but I know she is going to want to deal with the multiple stones in both kidneys. The ER doc says there are some 7mm ones that worry him.
IS there one last push as the stone moves into the bladder? I was urinating every 10 minutes and while on toilet I felt maybe it passed in, but wouldn't I see blood?
I'm sorry- I'm a pro at small stones that don't make you go to ER but I've never felt one pass. I'm in a helluva mess with this trip and want to just get this stone OUT and get my duties done. But I'm terrified of being awake during any procedure.I'm needle phobic and get sick just around doctors, no matter the patient.
I'm scared. I don't want this to mean my stone has blocked the bladder opening and I'll die in my sleep or something. I mean, I've tried to do research but the best info I've found comes from people who have gone through this.
I thought having a baby was the worst pain imaginable. I thought RSD was the 2nd worse. But NOTHING compares to this. I thought my colon had flipped itself (my Mom's intestines did that when she was about my age) or that I was over constipated. Now I KNOW what this pain means and I am freaked out.
In a few hours I meet a doc who will judge me. If she says go home and pass it, what do I do with my 4 year old? I can't watch him AND lay in pain like this. He saw ENOUGH of this.
Pain's coming back- any help or info would be helpful. I'm Jen, by the way.

I saw a urologist and gave her the stones, she said the big one, with its pointy edges must've been a real problem and she was surprised it passed. I was just THRILLED to see them!
