Hi- I'm new in this forum, a member of the Chronic Pain forum here. I'm 46, and have had kidney stones for over 20 years, but never had one that knocked me OUT until last year. Since then, I've had 2 more serious ones, and a litho done on my right kidney. That blasted two very large stones.
A few days before Xmas, I went to ER with horrific pain & vomiting. The ER docs said I had a 7.5mm stone caught in my right ureter. I was horrified. They said it was so high up that I'd need lithotripsy. I had serious pain for a few days but the toridol and other meds helped. The ER docs both said I could stay for pain control, but I'm scared of needles and the toreador helped for the 1st 5 days.
I didn't get litho for 3 weeks! They don't have a regular litho machine at our hospital and they have it every few weeks, I had to go to a neighboring town to get it done. They told my hubby that it went well. Then I find out that the stone is still there.
I saw my own doc for my 2 week check-up and she showed me on my KUB that it was still in the ureter! I hadn't had the same problems I'd had after my 1st litho and no fragments. So they said my kidney was a bit swollen, but still no one seems to take this seriously. My Urologist left on vacation today, a day after finding the stone still there. They scheduled an ultrasound and for some reason, I was NOT to eat or drink 6 hours before it. I've had a million of them but I've never been told to not eat or drink.
My appt was late in the afternoon and I got a call to see if I'd eaten or drank, etc. I was surprised. They rescheduled it for Tuesday. They said the only way to get it ASAP was for my doc to have demanded an immediate US. If she is so worried about my kidney & the stone being stuck, WHY would she not insist on an instant ultrasound?
It's been stuck since December 20th and it is now January 24th. The litho did nothing. My Urologist talked of 2 procedures I could do now. 1 would be another litho, or I could do more invasive & get the kind of laser litho where I'd need a stent. Now, I am terrified of needles, of anything medical, but I'm blindly afraid of a stent. I can't even handle a catheter! So I did tell her I wanted the easier, less invasive type of litho, but how do I know it won't fail again?
Has anyone been through this? I'm truly frightened b/c my kidney is starting to back up & swell, but my doctor wouldn't give me to anyone else to take care of this while she's gone, nor did she insist on a immediate ultrasound which would've saved me a 2nd trip. I don't even know why I can't eat or drink before it but I worry about waiting until Tuesday. I'm having pain in my side, though manageable, and it's so uncomfortable I can't wear a bra, just a sports bra when going out.
How long can that stone stay stuck w/o hurting things? The urologist who did the failed litho also told me I have spongey kidneys and some disease I need to see a Renal doc for. But 1st we need to get rid of the trouble making stone. My kidneys are FULL of stones and I've gotten used to it, but I'll never get used to passing them.

I had a massive blockage of stones in my ureter from my left kidney which had over 100 stones and pieces. I ignored my Dr wanting me to come in for KUB's and blood work. As a result, my kidney is now shut down. The urine was unable to drain from the kidney and it eventually quit. Now I am living on my one good right kidney which also has a 5mm stone in it.
Moral is..if you suspect there is a blockage or of your urine output is decreased even after drinking tons of water, GET TO YOUR DOCTOR and demand ultrasounds and Xrays. Don't let what happened to me happen to you!
