Typically no abnormalities appear during standard medical testing, and so irritable bowel syndrome is identified by the symptoms. Although irritable bowel syndrome can cause serious discomfort, the intestines are not harmed.

Great, another embarrassment

So I was in town having what I thought cleared my bowels in the morning. Just on my walk home when I passed wind and messed myself again. This is so upsetting and distressing not to mention how embarrassing. I can't count the number of times I have had to rush to a toilet to clean up and bin my underwear. I wish there were an early warning sign, but as yet I have not spotted it. 


Does anyone know in advance when this is likely to happen?

I know the same story you have....it is upsetting when we do that....mine too...I hear ya....sorry...hugs

Have you tried taking enteric coated peppermint oil? There are some articles suggesting it maybe helpful in treating IBS. If your diarrhea is so bad, you really should discuss it with your gastroenterologist.

Omg _ I am still learning my symptoms, but his happened to me twice this week! I thought I was going crazy. Had my dr. apt this morning and he says yeah its IBS... I have lost 11 lbs. in a month stressing this - eating small meals every two hours; but nothing prepares you for an accident like that. It has made me withdraw and isolate myself from friends, family and events. Hate this too.
