Interstitial Cystitis (IC) Support Group
Interstitial Cystitis (IC) is a urinary bladder disease of unknown cause characterised by pelvic and intense bladder pain, urinary frequency (as often as every 10 minutes), and pain with urination. It is not unusual for patients to experience nocturia and pain with sexual intercourse. IC is also known as painful bladder syndrome (PBS), particularly outside of the USA.

I don't have IC, but I have had urethral syndrome for 25 years. I take 50 mg. macrodantin each day to keep myself pretty much pain free. Now, my gastroenterologist wants me to take a proton pump inhibitor (Prilosec, Nexium, etc). for my acid reflux. I'm afraid the macrodantin won't work if I take the ppi, because the macrodantin needs food and gastric acid to work. The ppi's shut off the gastric acid supply in the stomach.
My urologist and my gastroenterologist don't seem to think there will be a problem, but I just don't seem to think these 2 drugs will both work.
Has anyone had any experience with these drug conbinations? Any and all comments are welcome.

Is it because of infections? Bladder or u.t.?
Macrodantin is just for keeping infections at bay. Sorry I don't know about the other meds your talking of. All I know for sure is that macro. is an antibiotic. It is not for pain. Of course an infection causes pain and therefore if it keeps them away you could say it keeps the pain under control.
