Interstitial Cystitis (IC) is a urinary bladder disease of unknown cause characterised by pelvic and intense bladder pain, urinary frequency (as often as every 10 minutes), and pain with urination. It is not unusual for patients to experience nocturia and pain with sexual intercourse. IC is also known as painful bladder syndrome (PBS), particularly outside of the USA.

IC treatments

my doctor gives a series of treatments lasting 6 weeks....that is 1 each week for 6 weeks. you can during a flairup get these treatments. it is a mixture of 2 or 3 things that is supposed to calm down the flair. well it may help a little but you know how painful IC is!! lately i have had 2 of the treatments and it had the opposite effect!! yesterday was one of those.....i am so miserable. is anyone out there familar with the treament? or have had a similar experience?

When you say treatments, do you mean installations? If so, I've been getting them for 2 years now. Basically installations and diet and some homeopathic pills are all I do as far as treatment for my IC. Installations can cause me pain for a few days afterwards... then my bladder seems to calm down and feel better for a while. The catheter always make me hurt for at least a day.

Sometimes they dont help, are you telling your doctor that this is causing you more pain? If your having pain right after, it could be a couple of problems, either an allergy to latex, the catheter could have latex in it, call the clinic right away if your allergic to latex, that way they can put in your chart to never use latex. Or they are not using lidocaine in the solution. The doctor forgot to prescribe lidacaine for me, and never knew that the nurses were using latex catheters.
The only time these installations would help me is during my period, I dont have as much of a flare.

thank you for your comments!! i am not allergic to latex so i really don't know what is wrong. i have been having pain on a scale of about 5-7 everday and is is getting to me. i see my doctor in june and i will discuss this with him. i will be taking my last treatment in this series next week. in the past i have had 2 other series and they helped this is the only time that NOTHING is helping.
i have found the hard way that IC is really a bad disease to have!!!
thanks again for listening to me and responding. it helps to know there are others out there. i personally don't know anyone around here with IC.

I am receiving a series of instillations right now. I've had rounds of them before and the flare up would go away. This time, not working. I went yesterday and once the meds went in, I was so relieved. pain started back last night and today I am miserable again. Suppose to go back on Monday for another one but I don't think I will make it to Monday

i had my last in the series of 6 installations last week. in the past i got relief from them but this flare up has been different. right now today i am fine but after the treatment last week especially the day after i was sick and i a lot of pain. so i guess it will always be different with each flare up.....YUCK! good luck....it is an awful thing to deal with.
