Interstitial Cystitis (IC) Support Group

Interstitial Cystitis (IC) is a urinary bladder disease of unknown cause characterised by pelvic and intense bladder pain, urinary frequency (as often as every 10 minutes), and pain with urination. It is not unusual for patients to experience nocturia and pain with sexual intercourse. IC is also known as painful bladder syndrome (PBS), particularly outside of the USA.

I was wondering if anyone is able to exercise and what works? At this point I am still not able to exercise . Only gentle yoga and walking . Everytime I try anything else my pain flares up.

My uroligist told me to start out walking for 15 minutes at a time and build up when I could. She said just walking will strengthen your pelvic muscles which is important to anyone with IC. I started doing Leslie Sansone's Walk-at-home DVD's which do contain some aerobic moves (the advanced DVD's) but you can just walk in place if you are unable to do the moves. Exercise has really helped me with my IC and my deppression issues. Best of luck to you!

I highly encourage you to increase your exercise. Is stress your trigger? Both physical and emotional? Start slow and you will become stronger. I find that it helps to incorporate a lot of stretching and to build plenty of relaxation and down time into my week. If I don't keep the right balance between exercise and rest I defintely feel "off" and it seems to set me up for a flare of both IC and my fibromyalgia.

I walk or do other low impact exercise such as the recumbent bike, elliptical. I do light weights and also restorative yoga at home on my own. If anything ever hurts, I back off and/or find something else. Stick with it. Slow and steady wins the race.

Even some days the walking aggravates my IC. But stretching and Kegels and walking when you can are important. Isabelle1954
