Interstitial Cystitis (IC) is a urinary bladder disease of unknown cause characterised by pelvic and intense bladder pain, urinary frequency (as often as every 10 minutes), and pain with urination. It is not unusual for patients to experience nocturia and pain with sexual intercourse. IC is also known as painful bladder syndrome (PBS), particularly outside of the USA.

My uro said that a lot of people see great results with dmso instillations. How long does it usually take to work? I had my first one a couple hours ago and the pain with the urgency is awful. I'm scheduled to do it again Thursday. Is it going to be this bad then too?

I'm sorry you're feeling bad.

I stopped doing the instillations because I was in so much pain during and afterwards and never saw any real results. This is JUST ME. Other folks have found instillations to be a true life saver with pain! I hope they post about it!

I think that it depends on what is in the instillation. Lidocaine as a numbing agent makes sense that it soothes and helps me feel better within half an hour. But that is just one ingredient. Another that is important is Heparin which works as a healing agent. And the other ingredient is Bicarbonate which I read helps buffer acidity. This mixture has been the most effective treatment for me. This is not the DSMO form but it is another "recipe" which makes sense and is ultra effective with super fast help for the pain.

I am so sorry the instillations caused you so much discomfort! You really do need to tell your doctor about this before your next instillation. I've always gotten relief from them and my doctor wants me to hold it in as long as possible and I've always held it several hours. It's been 17 months since my last set (6) but last week I had a really bad flare and the only thing I ate different was butternut squash. So today I'm having my first one. I hope the doctor can fix this and you can get some relief. HUGS!

I was diagnosed with Interstitial Cystitis (IC) in 1995. DMSO instillations were the first treatment I ever received for IC; however, I did not get any relief. I do know that treatment for IC has to be individualized. What works for me might not work for you and visa versa. I even had Botox injections in my bladder wall but that did not help either. I recently started a blog to share my story and experiences with IC. Also, with my blog, I hope to provide support and encouragement to IC sufferers and others dealing with chronic diseases.
