Hi emily. I'm in an interracial marriage (husband white american and I'm african american). I've had times where I felt like I was betraying my own race mainly because of the treatment received by those within my race. I went through a period where I really started studying african american history however what I got from my studies is that african american people worked really hard to give us the freedoms we have today, which includes the right to fall in love and marry who we choose. Your husband may be getting some negative feedback from his family and/or friends which my be the reason for the sudden interest in his history. My opinion, give him time to learn about his history as long as he's not demeaning you in the process. If he's disrespecting you because of your race (or anything for that matter) then I would say gradually distance yourself from him because the minute you allow that type of behavior, it continues on. I'm black and my bf is white, and sometimes I feel like why am I with him once I started reading AA history and seeing what's going on in the news. At first, my bf didn't understand his own white privilege, but I was able to open his eyes. So, I go through phases where I feel like I should be with a black man.

Hi my fiance and I have been together for 12 years, have run the gambit and have heard it all or almost all, I am AA he is Caucasian. we get the stairs will stare back he will ignore I was a nurse am retired my family especially my sister is racist she makes remarks about the white people having all of the mone and treats Blacks like crap (s--t) I don't go there anymore with her in conversation, stopped long ago AA women used to say if a wr broke out I wouldn't know what side of the fence to stand on. I don't g with that We didn't land on Plymouth rock, Plymouth rock landed on us. I will say this, you have to rely love each other because it can get mean and nasty as for the families if you tell them off in a professional way do so and leave it at that. Find friends who are open minded we live outside of Chicago n the south suburbs which has turned predominately Black. They call my fiance names and on more than one occasion when he has been standing in line young punks have leaned and pushed on him. I am more of the aggressive type I will get out of the car and walk in, and walk up to one and say" whats up" one will respond this whitey is in the wrong part of town, I respond that whitey is my man don't make a sista go there. And came from one of the worst housing projects in Chicago, The Robert Taylor Homes, It has gotten so bad that next year we are going to move to another state but even if we weren't an interracial couple Chicago is as segregated and bigoted as they come. just when I thought it couldn't get any worse. But as long as you really LOVE EACH Other don't let others bring you down. It will be hard but I love him sooo much I would go to Hell and back because I love him that much and I know he feels the same about me. If not we wouldn't be looking forward to our thirteenth year! Hang in there I hope you two make it!

The past was good for AA what happened to AA and others was terrible but it was done to allow us to be where we are able to date whomever we please. I don't know how old your boyfriend is but he is disrespecting you and any female that he calls a Bitch I he says things lke that and then says I don't mean you or including you I would give him time alone s that he can make up his mind there isn't a pure race, let him know that ! Would he like you better if you were Black? ask him or maybe the two of you can go to counseling to find out what the two of you can do. It takes two people to love he is showing abuse i the things that he says and in HOW he says it. If he loves you Remind hm of what Dr. Martin Luther King said. That he had a dream that one day we would not be judged by the color of our skin but by the content of our character. Take it from there. Good Luck !

The problem with race and history is that it is filled with such sorrow and despair.

We NEED to learn from our past and move on. If we continually play the victim or blame game, we have learned nothing from those who have suffered and died for us.

It's not a black thing, it's not a yellow thing, it's not a white thing. It's a hate thing. The ridiculousness of blaming someone for a past that they had nothing to do with is beyond my comprehension. There are ALL races and religious persecutions. You want to count ratio of death per race. We can do that. You want to count atrocities per race? We can do that. But what does that really do?

Instead we can read on history, learn from it and try to make this world better. So frustrated with humanity.
