Yeah it is a little rude to ask that question, especially when we are talking and interacting like people who know each other well.

My husband and I are in our 50's.

Plenty of racial remarks since we've been together and I think this question borders on it.

It's best to learn not to let these kind of people upset us.

It happens almost every time we go to the store. The cashier will ask my husband where his items are. Not just the store...but in line somewhere too. We always get the "May I help you?" after we have already been helped. We have been married 10 years. I expect it to happen now. We do laugh about it a lot, but you are right...it does get old!

My man and I have been together 9.5 years now. We don't usually get this question. I think a lot of it might be due to our interactions with each other in public.

We make it kind of known we are together. Holding hands, laughing at each other, but always some sort of contact.

I find it more annoying when people stare, and not say anything at all. So my goofy man, shoots a cheesy smile to those that are like that, and simply says HI.

We are in our late 30s. So, I hope it does get better for you. Next time, you can just be a smart A about it. Have them ring things up separate, and pay for each other's stuff. Confuse them and have fun with them, LOL

The crazy thing about all this is both me and my wife come from mixed ethnicities.Her genes just chose the lighter side while mine chose the darker side.I hear some of the racist remarks made towards President Obama and they always say something about his black side ignoring the fact that he had a white mother.

This stuff upsets me, Im in an interracial relationship too. It depends on where you live too. Just make them feel stupid when they do that. Say something slick but nicely like " well if this is america and ppl are free to date whomever than what do you think?" or clap your hands and say "bravo for you, you put two and two together, now was that hard sparky?" or if its a cashier you can say "sweetie leave the hard thinking for people like us ok? thats why your a cashier, not everyone grows up to be smart". Im sure you'll walk away feeling better.

My husband & I always go grocery shopping together. We are never ask that question.

When me and my hubby are out, we never get asked if we are together...but when I go out with just myself and our kids, I often get asked if my kids are mine...lol! I just let it roll off my back and usually laugh because I clearly remember pushing both of them out so sometimes it just doesn't even require a response from me.

I know i'm a little late but I had to reply. That type of stuff happens to me and my boyfriend all the time. We have to constantly tell people we're together even after they see us interacting with each other.We either get "are you together" or "can I help you" after I already ordered with my boyfriend. We've been together for 3 years and it hasn't gotten any better. We just chalk it up to ignorance and don't let it bother us.

I thought that I was the only one...Every time me and my husband who is white. Go to the check out counter we are asked that he could be unloading the cart, chatting with me, even handing me money to pay and the cashier still asks. "Are you together"

What city and state are you living in? The cashier should n ot be worrying about the customors personal life. She should remain doing her job, and concentrating on not missing item to scan or giving you back the wrong amount of change. I know you and your wife try to laugh it off, but the human psyche can only take so much.

One suggestion you can do is the next time one asks you that question, tell them how happy you both are and why.

It happens often for my hubby and I and we are forty one. It doesn't bother me. I don't know if I've gotten used to it over the last twenty years or I'm happy the cashier isn't ringing up some other random white guy's stuff with mine because she doesn't want to offend. haha When it comes to me and my husband I probably overlook things, with my kids it is a different story.

I don't get that one too often, but one that I do get (I'm white, black boyfriend) is "Is this on one check?" We got to dinner often, and it's about 1 in 3 times the server asks that. It makes me feel like they doesn't really want to accept that we could actually be "together". It's weird. But overall, it's just something he and I, though surprised at first, realize we"ll be dealing with for...well...ever. :)
