Insomnia is a symptom, rather than a disease, and is characterized by inadequate quantity or quality of sleep. So I'll just say this. Check all the horror stories people have posted here about using drugs to unnaturally force sleep. They all have side effects of some sort, and some of them can be really severe.
And to state the obvious, it's not a good idea to take any Rx drug without a prescription.
There are better ways.
The thing is, even though I can go to sleep whenever I want, I often really enjoy staying up all night or for days so do so regularly. Insomnia is a lifestyle for me. I understand this is an impractical way to live, but the bipolar disorder gives me an irregular circadian rhythm so I am happiest when I am sleeping irregularly.
Other meds that have helped me with my insomnia in the past before I was put on Saphris are Ambien, melatonin., and Tylenol PMs. The latter two are over the counter and are a good place to start.
Talk to your doctor about Ambien if you really feel you need it. Remember though, it has the really weird side effect of if you take one and don't immediately lie down and instead stay awake, very strange things may happen, you may spend a lot of money on the Internet, you may black out and wake up facedown in the middle f a project, it is dangerous for a lot of people.
Don't take your friend's pills, get your own prescription. That's illegal and just a bad idea.
