You cope in a number of ways. One of the best is to see your doc to either treat or rule out an underlying medical basis. If none, which is most common, then you can look at the nonmedical basis, which typically is some combination of bad sleep habits and excessive worry about the idea of sleep.
The gold standard for treating the nonmedical sources are CBT sleep training programs. You can ask your doc about that, or if you're the self-help type you'll find much good info online.
It was important for me to get help for anxiety and depression and then practice those CBT techniques that Hypnos mentioned. Having tangible techniques and coping skills gave me a bit of "sleep confidence" and I was able to let go of the fear and eventually just sleep.
