Insomnia is a symptom, rather than a disease, and is characterized by inadequate quantity or quality of sleep. People with insomnia complain of difficulty falling or staying asleep, which results in significant impairment of daytime functioning. Insomnia is categorized as transient (shorter than one week), short-term (one to three weeks) or chronic (longer than three...
Usually, acute or short term insomnia starts with a stressful event like illness of a loved one. Most all of us will experience this one or more likely many times over the years. These short term episodes usually fade away on their own as the underlying issue is either resolved or we adapt to it in some way.
But what you are expressing -- self-hatred -- goes beyond an acute insomnia episode. It's understandable if you (or any of us really) gets grouchy from lack of sleep. But these sorts of intense negative feelings don't help. Instead, they are like pouring fuel on a fire.
The real answer lies within. It's really not so much the stressful event itself as it is our reaction to the stressful event.
And our reactions? That's something we can control.
If this doesn't start getting better on its own soon, my suggestion would be to seek a counselor. Getting to the true underlying issues is a whole lot better than treating only the symptom with pills, which could lead to an unhealthy dependency.
Good luck.
