As far as light, I use a mask. The ones with formed cups around the eyes are comfortable. One can open one's eyes with this type of mask on.
What has worked for me is a fleece headband with earphones built in. "AcousticSheep SleepPhones" is what I got; $40 from Amazon, but well worth it! If you're crafty, you can make your own. Just google "how to make sleep headphones" and it might come out cheaper to make.
Anyways, I just put on some relaxing music loud enough to block out the sounds and it really helps me fall asleep. I still have trouble staying asleep, but when I wake up, I just listen to the music for a few minutes with my eyes closed before falling back to sleep.
When I got a Marpac Sound Conditioner from Amazon I started being able to tune out the road noise. It really, really helped. Add on silicon (not foam) earplugs from Duane Reade and I've largely reduced the part of my insomnia that comes from sound sensitivity.
