A good start is usually your doc to either treat or rule out an underlying medical or psychiatric issue. But most insomnia is primary, meaning no identifiable medical problem. In that case it's typically caused by some combination of bad sleep habits and excessive worry about the idea of sleep -- neither of which will be addressed by sleeping pills.
In that case the gold standard is CBT sleep training methods for adults. If you haven't checked into that it might be worth a look. Much good info online if you have the self-help type.
