Insomnia is a symptom, rather than a disease, and is characterized by inadequate quantity or quality of sleep. People with insomnia complain of difficulty falling or staying asleep, which results in significant impairment of daytime functioning. Insomnia is categorized as transient (shorter than one week), short-term (one to three weeks) or chronic (longer than three...
Wow, your doc prescribed trazadone for sleep? That is a powerful anti-depressant often used for anxiety disorders. If I were you, I would try to clarify my diagnosis. Do you have these underlying psychiatric issues?
If so, then yes, they will disrupt sleep. Counseling combined with drug therapy may be the way to go, but I would seek a permanent solution to manage these issues that does not include drug dependency.
If your insomnia is only (!) six weeks, you should be reassured that most people in this situation resolve on their own. However, fear (you mention being afraid) is will prolong and perpetuate insomnia.
So my suggestion would be to try to let go the fear, and relax. Sleep is a process of letting go.
Try the easy (!) things first, such as be sure you have a consistent sleep-wake schedule. Avoid caffeine in any form later in the day. Try to get some good exercise most every day. Treat yourself to a relaxing pre-bed routine to help transition yourself to a drowsy state conducive to falling asleep. Avoid long naps. Etc and so on.
And feel free to ask questions. Some of us on here have been battling insomnia for shall we say quite a bit longer than 6 weeks.
I currently take Saphris for my Schizoaffective Disorder and insomnia. That's also a psych med. There's nothing wrong with taking meds to sleep and a lot of people need to, I know I do. Whatever works, you know?
I used to be on Trazadone for anxiety also and while it did very little for my anxiety it did always put me to sleep so that may be a good one for you. I wouldn't advise going of your sleep meds as Hypnos07 suggested. There's nothing wrong with taking medication as prescribed for a medical problem, it can help give relief.
Saphris is an anti-psychotic that has the magical side effect of putting you right to sleep within 20 minutes no matter how not tired you are. I can't be woken for 6-8 hours but once I'm up I'm sharp as a tack.
The thing is, I have to decide I want to take the Saphris before it will work is magic. Sometimes I stay up all night and don't want to take it because being awake is so fun. So I just stay up all night.
That's part of how I cope with my insomnia, actually, is by leaning in to it an indulging it on days when I can stay up all night. I'm on SSDI snd don't have a job so that's I stay up all night about twice a week. Tonight is looking like one of those nights.
Hope this helps you.
