My first suggestion would be to ban from your mind the idea that "there's no hope" of falling back asleep. Of course there is, that's just your anxiety talking. But that negative thought helps fuel and perpetuate the problem.
Getting up and out of bed if you are absolutely too tense to sleep isn't a bad idea, just head back when you begin to feel drowsy. Also your breathing exercises, especially combined with progressive muscle relaxation can work.
Personally, I use self-hypnosis for these common wakeups. It combines the relaxation method with auto-suggestion, and is very effective for me.
If your overall sleeping right now is OK, you will probably be well served by just letting the worry go about these wakeups. Stay with your plan because it sounds like it's working.
