Insomnia is a symptom, rather than a disease, and is characterized by inadequate quantity or quality of sleep. People with insomnia complain of difficulty falling or staying asleep, which results in significant impairment of daytime functioning. Insomnia is categorized as transient (shorter than one week), short-term (one to three weeks) or chronic (longer than three...
Just a thought ... I don't know what you do now or how much you like your job, but this whole situation may be a blessing in disguise. Shift work is tough, and especially for people prone to insomnia. So you may be well advised to start putting up your radar for a new job with more normal hours.
When I was your age I worked a lot of different jobs, tried a lot of different things, including a few months working a graveyard shift. Some jobs were good, some not so good. You learn from them all. Each job helps shape your overall career in some way.
There are good jobs out there. And working in a positive environment with people that appreciate you makes a big difference.
I actually like the hours because I've never been an early bird. I've always preferred going to be around midnight and getting up around 9 or so. I don't know how I made it through high school with good grades cause honestly I was always so tired I'd just sleep in class.
It's just like a big mess for an insomniac like me. Super sensitive to noise, can't have any lights be on(have to put blankets over things like a printer light), I only sleep well when it's cold, and I can't be wired/and or stressed. The more of these elements that come into play, the worse I sleep.
It's just a constant battle and I really do sleep so much better in the spring, winter, and fall months. When I feel comfortable, I can actually sleep when I want. In the 3 good sleeping season months I have a pretty regular sleep/wake up time without an alarm clock. Because of the temperature in the summer though, some nights I don't fall asleep till 4 or 5 in the morning and my body doesn't wake up when it usually does.
My body seems to want to wake up based on the amount of sleep, not the time.
My husband was a day person when we first met (meaning that he had a job that he had to go to during the day) and I was a night person (since my job required me to work graveyard shifts) ...but once we got together I tried my best to get day shifts so that we could see each other in the evenings. For a few weeks I would stay up all night...wondering when I would get to sleep and go into work sleep deprived. It started to get annoying enough that I couldn't sleep at night and he could and that my job was suffering because of it...so I asked my doctor to prescribe me some sleeping pills and before we knew it I was sleeping all night and getting up at a normal hour!!
Now we go to bed at about 11PM and wake up at around 6 or 7AM.
It might be a thought to ask your doctor for some sleeping pills and if he won't then just buy some Dramamine from your local drug store (it's available on store shelves in most drug stores...or ask the pharmacist for it) and take a couple of tablets. It should knock you out within 30 - 45 minutes. Just so you know Dramamine is usually taken for motion sickness but it works just as well when you can't get sleeping pills and you really need to sleep.
Be careful if your doctor writes you a perscription for sleeping pills and only take them when you really have to cause it is so easy to get addicted to them (from personal experience)...just a word of caution!!
