Insomnia Support Group
Insomnia is a symptom, rather than a disease, and is characterized by inadequate quantity or quality of sleep. People with insomnia complain of difficulty falling or staying asleep, which results in significant impairment of daytime functioning. Maybe I can offer a different view of what you are experiencing.
First, it's good that you dream, very good. Dreaming, especially vivid dreams, are normally part of REM sleep, and REM usually happens after the deeper, most refreshing stages of NREM sleep. So, from your description, be reassured you are at least getting some very important positive benefits from sleep.
It's quite normal to not remember falling asleep. Can anyone do that?
If time seems to fly by while you're in bed, that suggests you are in fact sleeping, but in a lighter stage of sleep and don't realize it. If time seems much faster in bed than when you are awake, you can probably count that fast time as legitimate sleep.
Hopefully, knowing this will help you relax and let go a little of the worry. Worry about sleep feeds insomnia. It's OK to let it go and let yourself sleep.
Don't blame you one bit for being tired of it. We can relate. What you can do is try to help yourself. For someone your age, maybe the single most important thing you can do for better sleep is have a regular sleep schedule, and in particular a consistent wake time, 7 days a week if you can.
If you have a consistent sleep schedule, limit your time in bed to 8 or 9 hours, and don't let yourself sleep in 'till noon, you probably will significantly help strengthen your ability to sleep better.
Also important to get exercise if you can, every day. That will also help you sleep. And avoid any caffeine after lunch if possible.
If you have any medical issues, be sure to address them with your doctor, as they could be contributing to this. But if there are no identifiable medical issues, as is the case for many if not most of us with insomnia, be confident you have it within your power right now to make this better.
