Insomnia is a symptom, rather than a disease, and is characterized by inadequate quantity or quality of sleep. People with insomnia complain of difficulty falling or staying asleep, which results in significant impairment of daytime functioning. Insomnia is categorized as transient (shorter than one week), short-term (one to three weeks) or chronic (longer than three...

Hi everyone. I'm Justin, I am 41 years old, and I have insomnia. My problem is getting to sleep. Currently, I'm in day 3 of the most recent bout. I believe I'm best described as having acute insomnia. It comes and goes sometimes with or without cause. I lead a productive, professional life...that is, when I'm not fighting this animal. When I am dealing with a bout, I'm tired, easily irritated, easily distracted, emotional, anxious (that gnawing sensation in your stomach) and feel physical symptoms such as fatigue, headache, nasauea, dizzyness, etc. When I think back on it, I was always this way to some degree. As a kid, if I had something on my mind, it took me hours to fall asleep. Clocks were my worst enemy, reminding me constantly that you should be sleeping. I have Tourette and I've dealt with sleep paralysis since I was very young. Through my 20's I didn't have problems. In my 30's is where the wheels began coming off. I had a project that required me to make a trip to Germany. I travelled often for work and quite rather enjoyed it. I was uneasy about this one though, being overseas, so far away from my wife and family. The idiot I travelled with knew what was best...we should not go to our hotel rooms, despite my nodding off mid sentence...we should go drink in Koln and then goto bed at local time. I could not reach my wife, which made me uneasy. So, for the next several days I slept very little. A self fufilling proficay each night. I was a basket case, but completed my trip and upon returning home slept like I hadn't in days. For years, I always remembered how horrible that felt but had no residual effect. Then one day, out of the blue, it came back. A sleepless night (after a late night hockey game) left me feeling fried. For whatever reason, I hit the panick button and called the doctor who saw me same day. He said I seemed unreasonably anxious having known me for many years. He prescribed me Klonopin .25mg. That worked for one night and that was all. Dosage was increased to .50mg, then 1mg, then 2mg. I leveled out for a while, then my 3 year old son had open heart surgery to correct an ASD. Stress ruled my life during which time I sought medical care for a bout that was going on for a week. They prescribed me a a stronger benzo and Ambien. Ambien knocked me out, but I was awake 4 hours later like clock work. I started taking the pill while i was in bed, and over a few weeks, I started falling asleep before I took it. I am now prescribed 1mg Klonopin twice a day, but I only take 1. I will go for months without so much as a hint of a problem, then sometimes in reaction to stress in my life and sometimes for no good reason, it will rear it's ugly head again. It's doing so right now. Wednesday night I slept 5 hours, last night 1 very lightly if I was lucky. I don't practice good sleep hygiene. TV in the bedroom, my phone on the headboard (i'm an IT oncall manager). One consistency with this otherwise senseless condition is, once I roll over and my eyes start to get heavy, if anything arouses me from that state, i'm done.
Just wanted to share my story with others who are fighting these same demons.

Sorry to hear the insomnia come back again. However, I do not agree it come back for no reason. There is always a reason. If you are on call IT Specialist, and you have to handle lots of responsibilities at your work, all those factors greatly contribute to the problem. Some people can perfectly work shifts, be on call and have stressful job and sleep well. But, you've mentioned that even wile being a child you struggled to fall asleep if you had something on your mind. So, may be a job you have is not a best choice for you. Then, sleep hygiene is a must. There is a great book "Effortless sleep method", I would advice you to read it. In general, medication is a temporarily solution, there is no magic cure and it looks like fixing this problem is solely mental and behavioral thing. This is what it is. Firstly, stop worrying if you can. Then, go to sleep only when you are sleepy, do not stay in bad if you can not fall asleep, take vitamins, exercise, eat healthy food. ..In my opinion, when person already has a sleep problem, this is exactly the time when he/she should think seriously about changing their life priorities and habits. Ambitious, goal oriented and successful people suffer a lot from insomnia. So, may be lowering the expectations of your own performance is a right thing to do. I wish you the best and keep us updated.

Hi and thanks for the input. You're spot on. When I don't think there's something on my mind, there really is, it's just low enough not to cause an anxious reaction, but there just enough to disturb sleep. A career change is most likely coming my way, be it my chose or not. Sooo, if it comes to me I will treat it like the gift it actually is and move on to something with less round the clock responsibility. I need to fix my sleep hygiene for sure...it's one of those things where you kick yourself in the ass for not doing because it's such a simple solution. I will definitely take your advice on the book.

You are welcome. I glad to be helpfull. I strugle with insomnia for the last 8 years, and this hideous beast turned my life in such an undesirable direction. Insomnia ruined my plans, dreams and made me completelly dependable of my spouse. I gave up on the carier, i do not have social life...i got to the point when i can not constract a positive future for me anymore. I was still been able to do a lot familywise. But, only me knows what extroordinary efforts i had to take to have basic things to be at place. Anxiety is what feeds my problem. I never thought of that seriously, calling it just prolong unbearable stress. However, anxiety is a serious condition, this is how our minds responds to a stress. I am teryfied how many different thoughts and feelings i can have at once. And how desorganized and chaotic they are in the night. I am in general very organized person. Unfortunately, when the night comes i am so anxious and i can not get my thoughts under control. I have complicated situation: kidds, and unhappy marriage. It is almost impossible for me to relax and to rest. But, if you are in a better situation, try to focus on you needs first. Organize your life to your best conviniense, try meditation or relaxation...or may be there are other ways to control the Anxiety. ..even if it is mild. Lots of phisical activities and sex:). People who do manual labor sleep weel. Geting phisically tired is impotant. Sorry for being lenthy. Good luck.
