I know- I have lived it.
Most cheating spouses spew lies like a can of pop under pressure when caught. Betrayed spouses, in a state of shock and disbelief, feel a need to believe those lies to preserve themselves. He says it was just one night after a fight, hanging out for a smoke, it happened and he didn't wear protection? Poppycock! He's a liar of huge proportions, and he's shifting part of the blame onto you for getting into a fight with him, as if that's a good enough excuse to do what he did. He's probably been seeing her for a whole lot longer than he's telling you. He was just hoping you'd never find out, in order to keep his dirty little secret in the closet.
Couples counselling isn't effective until you've both had individual counselling. Most cheating spouses lie and hide the truth, and many go underground with the affair during couples counselling. You have a long road of discovery ahead of you, and I would consider seeking help of a registered therapist to talk to through this very difficult time.
I wish you well.
