Know what I'd do? I'd use this down time to see if I could rent a studio apartment. Then when he gets out, give him the choice- him or you who goes.
You can fall apart once one of you is gone. Then pick yourself back up and rebuild your life without him.
hospital is an escape for him. Just like a suicide attempt was a few years ago. He is hiding, waiting till the storm passes by. He NEVER hit the rock bottom. You did, but he didn't so he never got enough motivation to get sober (aka stop what he was doing). This time is not going to be different.
I am sorry but I don't see other way. Rehab, 12 steps program or you will have to leave him if you don't want to be exposed to it over and over again.
