The Dentist

As if going to the dentist isn't miserable enough, I find myself more and more upset each time I leave there. I go every 6 months for my cleaning/exam. I have declined X-rays the last 4x because "what if I am pregnant this time?" This morning's trip to the dentist was particularly painful. The hygienist inquired of any meds I am on and what they are for. I explained the current regimen of meds and expected it to be left at that. She proceeded to talk all about how relaxing would be just what I needed because I'm so young (27). Then all the stereotypical stories about how "my friend just stopped thinking about it and it happened." This went on for a good 5 minutes (that felt like an eternity). I finally said, "I'm not trying to be a jerk, but I really don't want to talk about this or hear about your friend's experiences. I only shared the medications and what they are for with you because you are a treating health professional." She seemed somewhat receptive to this, but not entirely understanding. I think she felt bad that I sort of shut her up. I wasn't meaning to hurt her feelings, but her ignorant statements were hurting mine, and lets be honest, the dentist is painful enough!

There's my rant for the day, 5days into my TWW on my first IUI cycle.

That does suck... I think it is important when these opportunities rise to speak our minds- you may have spared some other woman those lines from the hygienist because she learned from you. Infertility is spoken about little- I'm guilty of that as well- but it's good you spoke up. You're completely correct- she is a health professional- you don't need to hear "stories", you need to hear how these medications may or may not impact your teeth and any dental treatments. I think the hygienist wanted to be helpful but we all have been in those situations where the stupid unwanted advice is given. Good for you for chiming in!

Urgh! How annoying! I've done the same thing with the dentist. I keep refusing the x-rays and I feel like a fucking idiot because I know they wrote that I was trying in my chart. So now I get the weird "how's it going" questions and I hate it.

My OB actually sucked during my last visit too. First, she left me sitting there for over an hour (again) to see her. Then rambled off all the dumb comments people say, like you hear from your dentist. Then proceeded to tell me that pregnancy will cure endo and all sorts of other things. THEN she went into saying that my old Dr (who just got outed for molesting patients while under... he did my lap) probably didn't do anything because some patient are "crazy". Thanks, asshole. I'm getting a new DR.

I have no idea how people in the professional field can act that way. I'm so sorry you had to be blunt with her because I'm sure that was hard. Good for you for speaking your mind and keeping her quiet. Maybe she will think next time and not do that to someone else.

I always hate that question at the dentist! I typically say I am on nothing, even if I am... I just don't want to talk about it. Good for you for sticking up for yourself and telling her to stop talking about it! I am sure she was trying to give you hope, but did not realize what she was saying was more hurtful!

Good luck! I hope this 2ww does not drag by for you and it ends with good news!

Good for you! I usually do the same as LMWT- choose to not even disclose to avoid this type of annoying comments! You are right, the dentist is bad enough without having to deal with unsolicited discussion!! Good luck in the 2ww. :-)

Good for you for saying something to her :) In her mind she probably thought she was being helpful. But maybe, just maybe, she'll think twice about saying something similar to the next person.

That is definitely frustrating! I can't even count how many times I've heard stories about how "it'll just happen once you learn to relax and not stress out about it so much." Or how everyone seems to know someone who thought they would never be able to get pregnant but they did. It makes it hard sometimes to even want tell people about it. It's frustrating that a health care professional acted that way :/

That was completely unprofessional of her, and I think you handled it perfectly! Sorry people can be so insensitive.
