I am 28, with unexplained IF, and my doctor suggested two considering it was all being paid for out of pocket...gives you "most bang for your buck" he said, but does increase the risk of twins. Twins wasn't something we "hoped for" or "wanted" but was something we would be thrilled with. So, we ultimately transferred two and actually just left my first ultrasound at 6w4d where we discovered that one of them decided to stick.

Personally I agree with your Doc. One is always the safest and also transferring one has the best rate of success. But it also depends on how any embryos you get? When I did IVF I only had 2 embryos that survived. This left me with the option of transferring both and hoping it worked or splitting the odds and giving myself 2 tries at the transfers working. I transferred one and the 1st transfer didnt work. I was so thankfully I only transferred one because it gave me a 2nd change and the 2nd time it worked. So if you dont get a lot of embryos I would not even consider transferring more than one at a time. But some people get 13 embryos so if that is the case maybe consider transferring 2. Good luck! My vote is transfer one and see what happens.

If you are financially able, I would start off with one at a time. I know a ton of people who transferred two and got pregnant with twins right off the bat. You might be one of those people who get lucky on round one, so unless you're willing to risk twins (and it is risky as much as it's a blessing!), one at a time until you know how your body reacts is probably your best bet.

(for what it's worth, my first single transfer was BFN, second single transfer was BFN, first double transfer I got pregnant with twins and lost both, second double transfer I got pregnant with one and miscarried almost immediately, third double transfer and I'm currently 11+4 with one healthy baby - and I was 29 for the first three and 30 for the last 2 with stage 4 endo.)

We did one embryo at a time. Age 34, endometriosis, only way to conceive was IVF because both of my tubes are gone/bad.

Hubs and I talked about it a lot and at the end of the day I had to trust my doctor and my husband's decision on this. The doc said since we got to the blastocyst stage, he wanted to only transfer 1 embryo. Hubs really really didn't want twins, so again pointing to one embryo.

We got pregnant after 2 cycles and our little guy is 14 months old now. I'm very happy that we followed the doctor's recommendation.

I do have friends who implanted more than one and had twins. Most ended up delivering premature babies because twins often are delivered 5+ weeks early. One of my close friends had her twins at 26 weeks because one of the twins was about to die and if the girl had died, then the boy would have died too. The babies survived, but her little girl is still using a feeding tube (original due date was October 2013 so the twins are now 16 months old).

So it's your call, I have other friends in their 40's or with more fertility issues who have implanted 4 embryos and none took. So I say listen to your doctor, listen to your spouse, and then discuss the options with them. Hope this helps.

Thank you so much, although we are not against twins, all of your responses helped and it can be risky to be pregnant with twins. Considering this, I am certain that I will go for what my doctor thinks. Also, I am very lucky and thankful that my insurance covers ivf (for 4 tries) so for that I am very blessed. Thanks for the insight, I dont know why I was struggling with the decision, I guess we all want it to work so bad that sometimes think the more is better, but in the long run its healthier considering age, for one.

I gave had two successful single embyo transfers. I was 33 at the time of my ivf. Although all my embryo's were PGD tested. That is the direction most dr's are moving toward now. I have a 2 year old son. And I am 17 weeks with my second from an FET.
I think with your coverage, and the risk and stress associated with multiple pregnancy's, having one baby at a time is ideal.

I always transfered two and have month old twins as a result of my 3rd ivf. Just turned 32 after their birth too. I love them to death but with that being said, a twin pregnancy and delivery can be very hard or dangerous. I don't know if I would do things differently but I would think twice about transferring two if I could go back. I had major postpartum complications and all my specialists think they are due to twin pregnancy. Granted thousands of twins are born every year without complications but my body was exhausted from carrying mine.

So just a different side of the coin of transferring two. I would go with your gut and take into consideration what your doc recommends

My husband and it have been having this talk as well. My RE said to let's wait and see how many we get and if we end up doing the genetic testing and go from there but she said she will do one or two but that we will have a good talk about it before deciding.

I think do what your gut tells you since you do have coverage however doing a set is a good way to go I did a double transfer though and only one took I had to pay for everything out of pocket though and my re said only 30% of double transfers take and it also depends on health issues as well as family history (twins in family etc) but at the end of the day it's your call to make I am glad I did a double transfer because we would not have been able to do a fet had I done a set and it didn't take
