I am truly sorry as it is a hard path to go down and you have to remember... this is not your fault.. beating yourself up isnt going to change it - if your comfortable explore other ways so you can become a father and your wife a mother.
We are struggling with conceiving a child, and after several years got testing back that my partner's sperm 'dna fragmentation' was in the very low range, meaning his chances of having a bio child were very low and the most devastating news was that it eliminated IVF as an option - that was my cushion or go to plan if we continued to struggle. In response to your question, how to best support your wife, I'll share with you my perspective, from my own experience. Validate your own and her feelings, share how you feel with each other, and be compassionate and affectionate with each other. My partner deals with stress in the opposite manner (avoids, retreats, bottles up) and also shuts down my emotions and invalidates my feelings. I felt a need to be open and expressive about the loss of being able to have a bio child with him, without it being perceived as a I was attacking him. It made it very difficult to process what news we just got dealt and felt unsafe discussing potential options for having a baby. We are working on this, and improving slowly. It's so difficult.
I am happy to say we had some positive news however, that his recent sperm sample had significantly improved (we believe it was lifestyle and stress he was under when his dad was passing away from cancer at the time his sperm would have been created). We were thrilled with the positive news, and now are feeling a crunch age-related to move on things fast.
Wishing you all the best for you and your wife through this journey.
