Hello there - OK so this maybe an odd question at this point in the game. But I went to my RE this morning and I have several eggs this cycle for my IUI. She said I would be a perfect canditate for IVF this cycle if I were doing that.

But she said I will be ready for IUI by Friday but that I had to think about a few things and decide by Friday. First if I want to do IUI at all, or just BD at home and try that way since I have so many. Secondly if I do decide to go ahead with IUI they want me to sign a form regarding "selective reduction" if I get pregnant with more then 2. It's weird to even think about signing anything regarding being OK with doing that considering I'm not even pregnant anyway yet!

I have heard from some ladies a while back on here that have had it done, but can't recall their thoughts or what happened with that.

I've been trying for 4 years now, I'm a bit older and I really just want to be pregnant already...I've had some rough roads to travel to get to this point, with a miscarriage thru it all. I feel strange even thinking about it at this point, but since I have to research it and possibly sign a form stating I won't have a problem with it on Friday I'm a bit nervous.

Please let me know your thoughts and if you've had it done or know someone who has.

I think for ages over 35 they don't really do selective reduction? At least for IVF i read somewhere in our documentation that they would transfer 3-4 embryos at a time? For ages < 35 they would do 1-2 max

My RE said that if you are young and have good quality embryos, we'll only transfer 2 so you won't have selective reduction but if you have fare quality, then 3 will be transferred. So if you really have good quality, then why don't you just transfer two. You only need one good one to get pregnant. I don't like the idea of selective reduction and it will cost more too. My RE said that it might cost you about 2000.

My case we transferred 3. 2 good quality and one fare and i got pregnant with twins but unfortunately I had a miscarriage later.

Well I'm not doing IVF though...I'm doing an IUI cycle so I have at least 3 follicles that are going to put off an egg, possible 1 more or so.

So they do want me to think about it and discuss with my husband if we will be willing to do it. My insurance covers it all too - but still it seems kind of scary too. I've seen some statistics on it though and because I am over 35 it would be too much of a risk for me to carry more then 2 full term, for me and the babies. THAT IS if I get pregnant, which I'm praying I do this time!

Sorry! I forgot that you're planing to do IUI. That's a hard decision cause you don't have the control over it. Let's hope that you will get pregnant with twins and that's it :)

My husband and I have talked about it. It's extremely controversial. I truly believe that everyone has circumstances and they should be respected. Having said that... if we concieved more then three... we would probably opt for selective reduction. As horrid and emotional as that would be... I'm not physically big enough to carry lots of babies. The babies would be very pre-mature.... like I said it's hard. I know people who have triplets and quads and they are healthy and after the pregnancy of course you wouldn't choose to "terminate" one. But it has to be what feels right to you. I truly hope you or I never have to be faced with that decision. Like I said it's controversial.... so please don't "hate on me" for my thoughts and opinions (to anyone reading this).

Oh I don't hate on you at all...I appreciate your feed back...everyone's opinion will be different I think with this subject.

I know my husband wouldn't want me to risk having more then twins either, so we're kind of on the same page...and I know it's premature to think about this anyway - but I was told this morning by my RE that I have to think about it because they will require me to sign something regarding multiples since I have so many eggs!

well i made the analogy with ivf but its pretty much the samewith IUI...u have three follicles u can potentially have triplets right ... i guess with iui u must sign something becase they cant take out your follicles :)... i think with three u have a great chance ... good luck

I'm actually surprised they are making you sign a form - you don't have THAT many mature follicles....you have the same amount as I did. My 1st IUI cycle I actually had 4 mature follicles and still got a BFN. Then my 2nd IUI cycle I had 3 mature and 1 'maybe' and ended up with my twins!

Honestly I wouldn't have reduced if I ended up with triplets, quads I would have had to think about. And if I ended up with MORE than quads (which never would have happened because my RE only lets you have 4 mature follicles max for IUI) I am pretty sure I would have reduced. But I'm also 25 so that might change my perspective on things.

In your situation, I'd sign the form. I wouldn't cancel a cycle for something that may or may not happen....if it did happen and you ended up with more than twins, I'd cross that bridge when I came to it.

What exactly are you signing? Are you agreeing to do selective reduction or just consider it or hear about it?

I wouldn't sign anything...I would cross that bridge when I came to it.

When I was trying to do an IUI, I was told we had NO mature follicles and wouldn't have any viable eggs. I had to cancel the IUI and then I ended up getting pregnant on my own that same cycle and now hae a 14w old baby. So, the REs don't know everything. Go with your gut.

Our RE's office had us sign a form indicating which way we would go with selective reduction--you either check the box for YES you would be for it, or NO, you're against it. Maybe that's what your form is? Anyway, we chose NO, that we were against it for this reason. We've tried so hard to get pregnant and spent so much money and had so much heartache...our thought was why in the world would we choose to take a life that God blessed us with? We're pretty spiritual and we feel that everything is in God's hands anyway, and he would never give us more than we could handle. We even transferred three at FET knowing we had a chance for trips. Being pregnant with twins twice we knew God felt we could handle two. However, after miscarrying one set in the summer, and this time around having one stop developing around 7 weeks, we're just grateful to have one still growing and healthy baby at this point. It's definitely a personal decision. Good luck!

Thanks for all your replies. I think she's worried about me having 4 or more mature eggs by the time I ovulate - I had 2 large and 3 small on the right side, and 1 large and 2 small on the left. She said that anyone of those smaller one's could catch up and ovulate with the larger one's.

I'm just going to be happy I'm prego, period...so I'm just praying that it happens. And I'll cross that bridge when I come to it...which hopefully I have at least one to cherish...I'm so excited and nervous, I just want it to be 2 weeks later already LOL :)

When we were going through treatments my RE made us sign a form saying that we would be willing to do selective reduction. It didn't list a number though. My DH and I had always said that 4 or more we would reduce and 2 or less we would keep...3 that little number scared us because we didn't know which way to go with that one.
