I am new to the group.
After trying for a year and three months we finally got the news that my husband has a low sperm count and IVF is our best option and of course neither one of our insurances covers it.
Because I have worked in the insurance industry for many years, I was semi prepared for this, but you are never really prepared until you hear the doctor say it you.
As fortunate as I am to have many friends who have had fertility problems, their insurance covered IVF. I am the only person I know who has the issue, but insurance won't pay for it and I feel very alone.
In talking to my best friend who had IVF done and got pregnant from it, the conversation made me feel worse. The money aspect didn't seem to register with her. She said going through IVF once made her not want another child. (Not something I would have said to a person who does not even have 1 child).
I don't think people understand that dropping $12,000 is not something everyone can do with a snap of the fingers and the idea scares my husband.
It is sad when money becomes a factor on who gets to become a mom.
I am proud that many years ago, when insurance companies would exclude coverage for those who had a pre-existing condition for infertility, I was able to help get them covered. I am so blue I cannot help myself.

I was actually just looking at new insurance plans to see if any of them cover IVF (eventhough we're nowhere near that step yet, but it would be good to know) and i haven't seen any of them that actually do cover it. I totally agree that it's really sad when finances dictate such an huge and major decision. I think what else is so scary is that after spending so much money, there's not even a "guarantee" that it will take. So then it becomes more and more. My heart goes out to you for being in this situation and i hope that your answers come in some shape or form.
We've recently passed our IVF in Ukrainian Biotexcom and spent 9900 euro for the procedure. But the point is that we have issues which differ from yours. I'm 41 yo and diagnosed on diminished ovarian reserve, dh is ok. So we had to use donor eggs for the shots. (Here we've booked the 5 attempts program but managed to achieve pregnancy from the 1st att. - I wasn't even expecting this happens so fast!)
I also wanted to say I'm sorry for your dh who is confused a bit with IVF issues. But it's not so scary as is often thought. Before moving to donor egg we did one round ICSI with own eggs but it failed. I guess no impossible thing is there for the struggling people. We all feel anxious dealing with a completely new thing - but this is absolutely normal.
