I am new to this site - my husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for a year with our first child, I’m 36 and he is 41. After all of our baseline testing, I fall in normal range on AMH and FSH and have had a resting Antral Follical Count of 12 on two separate occasions. My husband is in the normal range on motility and count, but only has 3% on morphology (slightly below the 4% which would be the bottom of the normal range). We were told we would have about a 40% chance of conceiving if we did three rounds of IUI with clomid. We opted to go straight to IVF w/ ICSI and our egg retrieval is scheduled for 3/7. I am wondering if anyone has similar stats or any wisdom to share on IVF vs. IUI - this was a hard choice and if we aren’t successful on round one of IVF we may want to try IUI for cost reasons. I'm 39 and my husband is 37. We've been trying to have a child for 4 years now . Like you all of our testing comes out normal but we have been diagnosed with unexplained infertility. On March 2018 I began my first round of clomid and then one IUI in May which was unsuccessful. I continued taking clomid after that until August when I stopped. Our doctor then suggested going straight to IVF w ICSI which we began in November 2018 and unfortunately got a negative pregnancy test on December 13 2018..
I believe you made the right choice and went straight to IVF. 3 IUIs would eventually end up costing almost the same as an IVF and with less chances for success. I sincerely hope this IVF will have a positive result for you but even if it doesn't don't hesitate to continue trying with IUI since you are a good candidate. Your age and blood work etc don't impede IUI success in my opinion so don't feel like you'll be taking a step backwards if you do IUI after IVF. (Which I really hope you don't have to do!!!) how has your experience been so far?? Your egg retrieval is in March so I guess you're at the beginning stage of IVF. How are you coping with the shots?
We're considering starting Femara /letrozol and then have an IUI since we're totally broke after the IVF.. I'm still not sure though..

we have been trying for 4 years unsuccessfully and I feel like have tried pretty much everything out there.
We did do the three rounds of IUI which were unsuccessful and did one failed round of IVF so far.
We decided to do IUI’s first because we wanted to eliminate all possibilities and work our way up to doing IVF if we had to.
In my personal experience if you can’t seem to get pregnant with your first round of IVF there is absolutely no reason to try IUI.
IUI is such a crap shoot of a method, they are just squirting semen into your uterus hoping something takes, we just thought it ended up being a big waste of time/money. (plus, if they place you on clomid, it personally made me bat shit crazy, I hated that stuff)
That being said the IUI rounds are significantly cheaper to do than IVF (here in Canada anyway). If its for financial reasons you are considering trying IUI, sure go for it. But if where ever you are the three IUI’s are close to the same price as an IVF round I say forget about it and just go straight for IVF.
