Hysteroscopy before FET or not???

Hey ladies, can anyone offer me any advice, I have no idea what to do, its not a drama I'm just a bit confused what's the best thing.

First I am very lucky that here in NZ due to my situation my cycle is funded, however today my RE offered me the option of having an (unfunded) hysteroscopy to have a quick look before my FET and to injure the lining for a better chance of implantation. It costs NZ$1085. Either that or for $280 she offered a pipelle, to injure the lining but not bother to look for polyps etc.

I am totally at a loss as to what to do. Its not funded because it's not essential, however, I am in two minds. I want to do everything I can to make it work, but then its my first ET (no failed cycles) I think lots of clinics suggest this only after a failed cycle. But do I really want to waste an embryo, to save $1085? Its quite a lot of money but then I know I am lucky to have a funded cycle so what's $1000.

I could just go for a pipelle, I think I should at the very least do this, but then will I always wonder if it would have worked if I'd had the HS?

Truthfully I wish I had done more prior to my first IVF. If I had pushed for a lap/HS before hand, I may have never miscarried. During my HS they found fibroids and a septum both of which never showed up on any other scan.

I say if you can afford it, than go for the $1000 versus the $280. Like you said, you do not want to have to think of all the what-ifs, if your FET does not work.

I had a hysteroscopy before my iVF...i wasnt given an option of wither or not i could have it done....idk what the cost was for it but i paid $9417.00 out of pocket for the IVF so like you said whats 1000?...however idk what you mean waste an embryo? they did not use an embryo when they did mine....they just used fluid and filled up the uterus to look for abnormalities.....it hurt pretty bad..my cervix was closed up like fort knox when he went to do it and he was trying to force dialate me and i was bawling my eyes out lol so he stopped and i had to use misoprostal that night and go back the next day so my cervix would dialate and then it wasnt so bad..just had a lot of cramping from the miso.

I responded to your journal entry, but I would defintiely do the hysteroscopy if I were you. Especially since your IVF was paid for, I would do whatever I could to make sure it worked. Good luck with your decision.

I had one before my FETs and I'm so glad I did. I think we have to do all we can to ensure those embies implant and a hysteroscopy is a great way for them to rule out any potential problem that could make your precious embies not implant correctly. Good luck!

@KatenRob I think she means waste an embryo by it not sticking due to something that could've been noticed if she did the hysteroscopy

I say you should go for it. I, like LMWT, advocate for this because while I didn't have near of a loss as she did, I did go through lots of money I didn't have for treatments and lots of heartache and stress to then find out I didn't have a habitable environment anyways. It's always best to be sure everything looks great before doing something so huge. But you do what's best for you, that's just my opinion. Good luck!

I was about to go into IVF (But found it's not covered) and I'm glad in a way because now I'm going for a LAP/HS to be sure everything is clear before spending the money. But, it got me thinking that I should anyways because the IVF process isn't exactly fun. So cutting any risk of the embryo not sticking is good!

From what I hear it's relatively simple, and you most likely will get knocked out so they can clear anything they find out much easier than if you were awake. Recovery is pretty quick, but I guess uncomfortable from the gasses they put in your stomach.

The only down side is you can't try that month. It seems my appointment will be close to the beginning of a cycle for me, so I may not have to skip that month. Even if you do have to skip, it should make it well worth it!

Nedico! This is exactly what I am waiting on too! My RE said he wants to make sure everything looks well inside before a FET. I trust him and what he said made sense. I had a polyp prior to my March 2013 IVF cycle and my RE said maybe the reason I bled so bad with Isaac was because I had something like a polyp in my uterus. I would do it as well. We can be hysteroscopy buddies! :-)

I have had a hsg followed by a Lap and my tubes were clipped due to tubes blocked with hydro, so that was all to make it hospitable for an embryo, but I think you're all right, I would always wonder what if, if I had a failed cycle (that's what I meant by wasted embryo) The RE says it will just be a diagnostic hysteroscopy so no knock out, and really they don't think they'll find anything but I guess better to know than not.
Just have to hope my cycles fall in the right spot because otherwise the whole thing will have to wait til after Christmas!! Seems like so much waiting!!!

I had an hysterscopy before we started doing IUIs. Mine was mostly covered so it was a no brainer for me, but I would have done it anyway. I think it's always better to know than not know and if you have a failed cycle you will always wonder what if. $1000 isn't something to just hand over lightly, but in this case I think you should do it. It took a load of stress off of me to have it done.

I'm doing an FET in November and just did an Hysteroscopy last week. Insurance did pay for a portion of it, but my out of pocket was a bit over $800 (I pay 100% out of pocket for all IF treatments). The treatment was more exploratory, but I wanted to do everything possible to make sure my FET was a success. If I was to get another BFN with the FET, I would be forever wondering if I could have done something more. Personally I would spend the extra $720 and opt for the hysteroscopy.

Thanks guys, you are all right and I'll be doing the hysteroscopy!! Just have to hope now for a period before the 28th of November so I don't fall over xmas. that means I have to work out if I think its gonna fall in xmas before I decide whether to have the hysteroscopy or not in October, because they like you to have it the month before FET, so I wouldn't want to go ahead in October and then have FET postponed til December/Jan, then I'd have to have another hysteron or pippelle and that would delay me another month, seems like every time I speak with RE theres some other delay!!

Nedico - So, do you have to skip a cycle between the hysteroscopy and the FET? I'm starting my FET with the very next cycle, just curious how your clinic does it.
