I finally went to see an OB/GYN after an early miscarriage one year ago and no luck conceiving since then. The first test he did was a hysterosalinorgaphy, and he said that there was a large fibroid taking up about a third of my uterus. I saw the image on the ultrasound, and it looked large. So he scheduled a d&c right away and I went in for surgery. Then, when I went for my follow-up appointment, he said that he didn't think the fibroids were the cause of our failure to conceive. Huh? I don't get it. I thought he said that the fibroid was acting like an IUD, now he says that it probably wasn't the cause of fertility problems. If the fibroids weren't doing anything, why did I have to get surgery to get them removed??? And also, I read that getting a d&c can cause scarring, and make it even HARDER to get pregnant. So did I just make things worse for myself?

I'm not even sure what to do next. The dr. wants to do a post-coital test, but that just sounds too invasive and embarrassing. What kinds of tests should I be thinking about now? Does anyone have some advice?

I am so discouraged about all of this. One year ago I was happy and I thought that all my worrying was over, then I lost my child right away. I am having trouble believing that there is anything good in my future.

So sorry for your loss and your recent disappointments and struggles.. I would recommend that you make an appointment to see a fertility specialist for a consult or at least a second opinion and OB can only do so much for you... good luck!

I agree, the fertility specialists are good because they deal with only fertility issues. If it is one or something can be ruled out I would go to the experts. I was having issues and knew that it was affecting my ability to conceive. My PCP and OB told me I was fine and had nothing wrong, come to find out after seeing a fertility specialist, I had tubal blockage and had to have it surgically removed. I think you should schedule a consult with a specialist.

I don't really have that option. This doctor is the only OB/GYN I can see on my healthcare plan and also the only doctor in the area who claims to specialize in infertility and reproductive endocrinology. The nearest fertility clinic would be 6 hours away and definitely not covered by my insurance. I want to know what kind of tests I should be asking about and whether anyone knows about how fibroids may or may not affect fertility.

You should have your thyroid tested the post coital isn't iverly invasive and helps them deteime if your body might be preventing the sperm from surviving in your body.. I think you should seek a second opinion if you can even if it means paying a bit out of pocket it might give you peace of mind.. You can try to contact an re over email and they can send you requisition as to what they feel you should get tested for... This was the approach we went because the closest re is 8.5 hrs away from us and the phone consult cost us $200 out of pocket but they knew what tests they wanted run as well as they got my medical records before the consult so they were able to view my health issues... Hope that helpd

thanks, that's a good idea. If I got pregnant once, though, doesn't that mean that the sperm can survive? I am so new at this I don't even know what questions to ask

Sorry your insurance does not cover an RE and that the closes one is hours away .. I have had to pay for all my infertility testing and treatment out of pocket, not an easy thing to do and I have to drive 2+ hours to get to my RE so I get it! So I dug up the list of tests that my very first RE ordered for me, so hopefully this list is more helpful to you!

Day 3 FSH (measuring follicle stimulating hormone)
Day 3 Estradiol (measuring estrogen)
Luteal Phase testing- to evaluate progesterone levels
Endometrial biopsy
Hormone tests: Luteinizing Hormone, Follicle Stimulating Hormone, Estradiol, Progesterone, Prolactin, Free T3, Total Testosterone, Free Testosterone, DHEAS and Androstenedione

After all that came back normal.. she ordered an Hysterosalpingogram (HSG), Hysteroscopy and Laparoscopy
