He may want to check your uterus for any problems or abnormalities. Ask him if you can do a saline sonogram instead. It is a lot less painful. I had the same expereience. Had to go to the hospital to do my HSG and it was extremely painful. When they sent the results to my RE he couldn't even see what he needed to and wanted me to do it again. I cried I was so upset. They did a saline sonogram there in the RE's office instead and that way he could see exactly what he needed to. I hope that is an option for you. Good luck.

I haven't had an HSG test (yet) so I really cannot tell you one way or the other. But if you are this afraid of doing it again maybe you need to talk to you RE and explain your fears. Like SarahsMom mentioned, there may be alternatives that can give your RE the same results... Hang in there!

My RE will be doing a saline sonogram with no mention of an HSG test. Maybe that is an alternative for you??

hi i am glad you asked this. Mt RE wants to do another one too just to make sure b4 we do IVF. I had one a year ago that my OB did and 1 tube looked great, while the dye didn't splash in the other one. But I have heard the test isn't inclusive b/c the dye will take the path of least resistance which one tube could be open more then the other. Not necessarly blocked. Also, I am glad you asked about blocked tubes and IVF. I too thought it didn't matter, since some women have no tubes and get PG on IVF. I am confused. Can't wait to hear responses. ANd yes I hated too, very painful.

Your RE might also want to know if your tubes are blocked.
If they are, toxic fluid builds up and can possibly leak into the uterus-which makes a toxic invironment for your embryo to implant into. Just a thought-it was one of the reasons they had me do the HSG before IVF.

I am confused as to why the RE's would want to do another HSG since mine has told me that IVF completely bypasses the need for the tubes. I have also read this, so I don't know if they have other reasons. That's supposed to be a major advantage to doing IVF since you can have damaged tubes and still have a preganncy. Hmmm..puzzling.

If your tubes are closed or damaged studies show that removing the tubes prior to IVF will increase your chances of becoming pregnant. I know this because 8 weeks ago, I had an ectopic pregnancy and they had to remove my tubes. The most interesting thing is that I did an HSG a year prior and they said my tubes were open and when I had the ectopic they saw that my other tube was entirly closed. I remember the HSG and screamed from the pain but it is worth it. The tubes can close over time. I am an exmaple of that and now looking to start IVF in a few months.

I also just googled this and it said that the HSG test also is used to look at the uterus. So maybe afte the first attempt they just want to make sure that your uterus is happy and healthy?

Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) for the tubes (dye through tubes and x-ray machine) or a Hysteroscopy (saline filling uterus and ultrasound) for the uterus? I don't know about the saline sonogram, but that kinda sounds like Hysteroscopy. The two do different things.

Anyway, the HSG could be to see if you have a Hydrosalpinx, fluid in tube, which can cause problems when trying to attach. It's better to know if that's the issue or have it ruled out. And it may not have formed by the first HSG.

As for the "just bad luck" sometimes it is just that, it just might not have been a strong enough embie after all, there's a lot of "x-factors" unfortunately. This is what I was told, maybe it'll help. So we "know" when theres an embie in there supposedly ready to go, in natural TTC, there's no way to know how many times that same basic thing happens before a woman actually gets PG. It's just hard for us to get it because we do have that insight.

Don't let it get you down. This whole process is sometimes more than we think we can handle, then we're on the other side of a cycle, good results or bad we survived! Stronger and wiser.

You can do it. Just keep the end of the road in mind, and youll have strength youll be surprised by. Good practice for when we do have those little bugs were working so hard for now!

Sorry for the failed IVF. My RE also told me that you should take a break between cycles (anything with injectables) because you need to give your ovaries a chance to get back to normal and make sure there are no large follicles or cysts left behind. I went for 2 HSGs that were both completely pain free, but I believe the reason there is pain is when you have a blockage, the pressure from the dye being pushed through could understandably cause the pain. I agree with the other posts - the HSG looks at more than just your tubes - they can see your ovaries and your uterus. Things (such as endo, fibroids or cysts) can grow very quickly, so maybe he just wants to make sure everything else is clear before starting another cycle. I wish you all the best - can you ask for stronger pain medication before the HSG since the last one caused so much pain? And it definitely wouldn't hurt to ask about the sonogram instead of the HSG since you already know your tubes are blocked. Why go through all that pain if you don't have to!

I wouldn't think it would matter either. I just had HSG about a few weeks ago without a lot of pain. My RE and his partner were doing a study on HSG and the pain factor. He says that the amount of pain has to do with how quickly (lots of pain) or how slowly (little) the die is injected. It was uncomfortable for me but not unbearable. Good luck!
