So I called my RE's nurse today to find out if test results were back on the biopsy and my fasting lab work. She let me know that everything was perfect with the biopsy, the lining is forming correctly and is not an issue, however the fasting lab work was a different story. She stated that I am closer to being borderline metabolic syndrome than I was the first time I was tested, so my Dr. is suggesting I start taking metformin. I have a friend who was dealing w/ fertility issues that I'm close with and she had to take that, but never knew why she was on it because the dr said she had pcos but truely was never dx. I made the mistake of reading up on metformin and the side effects can be scary. Makes me wish I had the will power to go on a crash diet and exercise every free moment I have, but alas I will not. I am "OBESE" so says my little Mii character on the Wii. I have never been labeled as such by any of my actual doctors, but I do know that I am not at the proper weight. I have always struggled with weight.

I am wondering if anyone else out there struggles with their weight and dieting and exercise? Any tips? I'm a sweetaholic... I love sugar! and chocolate... hehe

Also, is anyone else familiar with metformin and what side effects did you encounter, if any?

I take 2000 mg of metformin xr/day. I have lost a total of 40lbs since starting it a yr and a half ago. It has definately made my body work more efficiently and i could actually lose weight. Before taking it i could not lose a pound for years.

Make sure you ask for the xr(extended release) type of metformin because the regular type will make you feel sick (diahrea and nausea).

I dont have any symptoms from the metformin now other than it helps me to lose and maintain my weight.

i was put on metformin three months ago bc i have PCOS. the thing about Metformin is its also used to regulate hormone lvls and im not actually insulin resistance. I really didnt have too many side effects. the first couple days i had to keep OJ on me in case my sugar crashed. and a few days i had stomach problems but now that my body has adjusted to the med im perfectly fine. also Metformin will help with weight loss:) good luck and dont worry about it too much.

I take 1000 mg of metformin a day. Mine was prescribed by the RE for my insulin. I'm at a 23 when I should be at 3-5. He labeled me insulin resistant. However, he said high insulin will cause problems with hormone levels. A combination of the medicine and a strict diet have helped me. I chose to do the Paleo Diet. It's similar to atkins but with more restrictions on your fruit intake. It was a huge adjustment for this carb loving girl. I was very strict with it for a month and a half. Then I gradually let myself have more of the things I enjoy. I have a "bad" meal once or twice a week. I dropped 25 pounds in 2 months and am feeling so much better. I consider it a life style change, not a diet. The goal is to lower my insuline. The glorious side effect is weight loss. I'm changing to prepare for a baby I might one day afford :).
Side effects: mostly stomach irritation the first few weeks. Then my body started adjusting to it.
