"Working with several generations of 12 families who survived the devastating Spitak earthquake in Armenia in 1988, Dr. Armen Goenjian and his colleagues at the University of California, Los Angeles, found that variations in genes that code for the brain chemical serotonin can affect how profoundly people are affected by trauma."
...Personality trait, or genetic predisposition to depression? Hard to say, and we don't get to isolate experimental variables on humans, praise jeebus.
Anyway, I'll have to look into the Emotional Intelligence thing, thanks for posting the article.
( ...I think I'm giving you a hard time because I've been gotten onto by optimistic cheery types for being a morbid, gloomy, defensive pessimist?
What they don't get? I'm either proved right or pleasantly surprised all the time. A good way to go through life... )
I don't think the post script at the bottom of your comment was directed at me, or perhaps it was, but regardless - I like the fact that such an outlook can make one pleasantly surprised often - We all need a pleasant surprise now and then!!

I believe that all forms of traits, experiences and conditions that factor into how we process trauma in our lives.....and I like the possibilities for growth that D. Goleman brings up with his book - the first part of the book is dedicated to the evolutionary formation of the human brain and emotional responses - starting with the "fight or flight" response up to the modern ability to rationalize and process threats more fully.
The second part of the book deals with the formation of "emotional intelligence" as Goleman puts it. I see it more of "emotional skill development" but whatever.....
It poses some really interesting scenarios for developing higher levels of empathy and emotional control. As I said - it really influenced my journey toward healing - in a positive way.
I hope it gives you something to think one on way or the other....
All my best
