I know, people think it's a push button you can just press and it's all gone. I have had it said to me too many times to count. After my first 10 years of therapy and support groups, I was able to let go of some of the pain, but new memories bring new pain. Although I no longer feel as much pain from the memories, I will be working the rest of my life at recovering from the affects of the abuse on my psychological makeup.

It is understandable that "Let it go" would evoke such rage in you.As you have listed here abuse has a deeply profound affect on a human being and just letting it go is not an option.We have to talk about it until all of our emotions have been processed.Anyone telling us to "Let it go" is just invalidating what we have been through.The real question is what kind of person would tell us to "Let it go" and why?The answer that I have found is that they who tell us these things do so because they can not handle the truth because there is abuse in their past as well.When we talk about our experiences this triggers PTSD in them and they can't handle it.Either you get distancing from them or they lash out at you.

I don't know how to "let it go" and when people say that, I wish I could do that. What exactly does let it go mean anyway? Does it mean forget? Does it mean forgive? Does it mean no more flashbacks, because I would LOVE that-but I can't control them, so how can I let them go? I can only imagine what letting it go would feel like. It would be amazing! I would love it if I could snap my fingers and let it go. But how do you do that? I don't know how.

HI , I can understand why you react so badly to being told to 'let it gol'. It's an accusation, that you're 'hanging on' , and it's very invalidating as if to say you don't have to feel what you feel. Just snap your fingers, and it's gone.
it's total bullshit. I've never been able to think of a clever retort, without sounding defensive. Just tell them where to go.
The main thing is that someone saying 'let it go' doesn't mess with you on the inside. We need self acceptance of all our feelings, unconditional self acceptance. THAT'S the way through to freedom.
My therapist was a big one for 'letting go of self'. The BIGGEST aspect of letting go of self was to CONNECT WITH AND ACCEPT whatever was going on inside.
When people say to 'let go' they're saying 'get rid of' but this is impossible.
No, you don't WANT the anger, pain and unrest. You're a perfectly normal human being who was abused, who's got a lot of very understandable negatives to work through. It takes time, and self acceptance.

Let it go - it is so infuriating because people who say that act as if that is something we actually know how to do. How do we do it? Hell if I know. Letting it go was dissociating and therefore not being in touch with anything so that is not healthy. So the only way to let it go is to get in touch with that rage. I guess if we go deep enough into the rage and hatred and terror that we dig out to the other side to China, we can get in touch with our Eastern mystical side and detach with love? I hope so because it is exhausting sometimes to hold on to it. If I make it to my zen place, I will be sure to pass along how many spoons it took in case I beat you there.

I think "let it go" makes me angry too because when I have heard it said I felt the speaker wanted me to let it go for the speaker's sake not for mine.

Jimbo - have you ever seen this saying "Fuck you you fucking fuck!" I saw it on a shirt in New Orleans on Bourbon Street years ago and I laughed and laughed. That saying works for me as well.
