I saw it in my family and heard about the whining from my mother about how mistreated she was by my brother, and it was a constant theme when my dad was alive. So I guess that kind of mother losses out all around and ends up with contempt from the abused and abuser.
You may have to be your own champion and seek out the therapy you'll need to overcome this and be the kind of mother you want to be, if you choose. It's not fair, it's not right, but changing your family into a loving, decent one is a monumental task and healing yourself is doable.
Please talk about this to a therapist, friends, here, etc. as it is the only way to heal.
