I just need some support. I lost my job a week ago. My career field is dead so the past 5 years has been one hokey job after another. My boss kept berating me for making one typo here and there. I had to answer heavy phones while typing and composing complex legal documents. Ridiculous and insane. Nonetheless I perservered. He finally fired me last Monday. A blessing, probably but now I am left to figure out how to feed and house my children. After talking to my former co workers they told me he was just trying to get me to quit because he planned on eliminating my position and he hates unemployment benefits. Why do people have to be so darn cruel. He sent my cPTSD skyrocketing.

I have no family at all. No boyfriend. I do have great friends but they are unable to help financially or house us. It's really nothing new that I am on my own to figure out how to make ends meet. I am just so darn exhausted from 12 years of struggling and juggling on my own to keep a house payment current and try to find a stable job.

I have decided that due to my age 47 which is apparently over the hill in the job market. I am going to sell my house and pay cash for a home in the desert about 45 minutes from me. I am taking the twins 12 yrs with me to buy an acre and a small home. I plan to get them a horse and grow my own fruits and veggies. I want chickens to get organic eggs. I can get a minimum wage job and still survive.

I just need some words of encouragement from you to make this big change. I need someone to tell me I'm not CRAZY!

If this works for you then do it!
As long as you are not expecting to make money out of the farm and are prepared to work hard, then I think it is a fantastic idea. it's not an easy life you are contemplating, but if it is what you want, it could be very fulfilling.

Just make sure wherever you buy has access to plenty of fresh water for growing the crops and watering the animals.

What do your children think of it? Will they still be able to see their friends?

It sounds like a good idea. Make sure you have a solid plan. You sound intelligent to me and I know what ever you do will succeed. I think the fresh air a healthy living will be good. Make sure you include your kids , and their ideas. I expect they are at an age that is difficult . I do not have children but have heard about adolescents. I think they are like most people, they need to know what they think matters.

Hi christykt, I am sorry to hear you've lost your job. I don't know what employment is like in your area but I do know it can be really hard to get another job.

The only thing I would say about a move is to do your homework and check out as much as you can re housing, the area, amenities, and support networks. Are your 12 yr old twins happy to move to another area - it can be a 'new start' for everyone.

You're definitely not crazy - sometimes change is thrust upon us and decisions made that one would not have to make if circumstances had remained the same (re your boss firing you)

45 minutes is not that far - is it possible to keep in touch with your friends and meet up every now and then? It does take time to settle into a new area - about 2 years - maybe - I know as I've lived in 10 different areas. You are still young and opportunities can present themselves - not necessarily work related. Variety is the spice of life!

I think it's a stellar idea. I'm trying to sell my home now and thinking of how to lower my cost of living. Have you heard of the tiny house movement? People are building their own tiny houses (some as tiny as 90 square feet! but others as big as 500 or so) to get out of debt and living mortgage-free. Check it out!

Thank you all for your wonderful comments, suggestions and encouragement. It means a the world to me. My twins are on board with the idea. I told them we could ride our quads and even get a horse. I doubt i will make any money farming but it could supplement our food and replace it with organic. I will be getting a job when i get there. Retail is the only thing there but i can survive in that since the house will be paid for. I will keep in touch. My house goes on the market in January.
