Incest Survivors Support Group
Incest refers to any sexual activity between closely related persons that is illegal or socially taboo. Consensual adult incest is very rare. Incest between adults and prepubescent or adolescent children is a form of child sexual abuse that has been shown to be one of the most extreme forms of childhood trauma. If you or a loved one is a survivor of incest, join the group...
Just a thought to add to yours...
Yes, you are correct - there is total overload where the ForF response just does not work and we just totally freeze - we hear of people who were in situations where they knew they SHOULD do one or the the other, but they just can't get their body to move either way.
You have just enlightened me on a subject that I will have to ponder at length --- Thanks, as pondering is one of my favorite activities actually!
Also, there is the group of individual's that simply do not recognize the threat, or don't believe they are in danger - and I have met several survivors who did not see what the "big deal" was that they had been molested. Totally different view of the event.
As always, when you talk about ANY mental process, especially in the higher structures, you find the one universal truth that exists it that there really is no universal truths.....we process things SO very differently due to our past experiences, age of experience, etc.
Thanks for getting me out of my mental "box" - easy to fall into and stay there.
Appreciate your input very much!!!

Thanks for adding to the conversation - I will check the link out more fully when I have time. A lot of our DV victims had issues with their husband's "reinterpreting" how things actually were and many were conditioned to just accept this "new memory" as it made some sort of twisted sense to them at the time. Often it takes years to be able to trust yourself once someone has taught you repeatedly not to rely on your own memory. What a shame.....
Again as always - all my best!
Steve
I debated with myself over whether freeze was just another form of flight, but as I see it in the psychological realm (as opposed to the physical world), flight is total denial and freeze is knowing in some way what is happening but not doing anything. Dissociation without denial of the event. I'm interested to see how the handbook describes it.
Love your universal truth Refuse. So true!
And, as it relates to me, I look back and see that "confusion" played a dual role; it was truly a result of all the mixed messages I received growing up and it also kept the abuse memories sidelined while I struggled to understand the world.
It takes no stretch of my imagination to call "confusion" a defense of sorts. Weird.
Whatever we used to survive worked because we are still here. For that, I'm glad.
