My response to criticism is to internalize it and if I could pick a phrase and my defeat that there was no fighting it, it would be my Dad's go to "You damn kids never do anything right." and with that example I had 6 older siblings who constantly criticized. And don't talk back!
I've had to learn to fight back against unwarranted criticism. You know how the boards can be.....on another one someone totally put me down and was trying for public humiliation. I got her post removed put her on ignore and I see she's more concerned with people who won't touch her posts than those supporting her.
Some people don't like me, I don't like some people. I feel no guilt about ignoring them. Let other people respond if they like.
Do you get defensive with criticism, Loum50? Or do you shut-down?
Relationships are tricky, even for those who don't have depression. If I'm triggered by something, I get confused and feel shame and guilt. I'm glad you are here and I'm glad you posted this.
What's making you feel betrayed?
Let's tell that child that it's human to make mistakes. Let's celebrate mistakes that you've made! Can we do that with you, Loum50?
I was the youngest of 5 kids, by quite a bit. I got way, way too much criticism. I've been focusing on letting go of professional criticism and it's working. It even feels more normal, if that makes sense.
It's like you were brainwashed to be super-human, which is not such a bad thing when it comes to success! But it's bad for the mind to feel such pressure all the time. How about allowing yourself to feel more part of the human race and letting those mistakes just be part of the experience?
