Incest Survivors Support Group
Incest refers to any sexual activity between closely related persons that is illegal or socially taboo. Consensual adult incest is very rare. Incest between adults and prepubescent or adolescent children is a form of child sexual abuse that has been shown to be one of the most extreme forms of childhood trauma. If you or a loved one is a survivor of incest, join the group...
I was born during the time that they gave children an antibiotic for infections which was later determined to stain permanent teeth in the gums, before they emerged. It also left them soft and prone to cavities and early loss. So my natural teeth are discolored (darker gray than white) and have always had issues with cavities - I have a small silver mine in my mouth currently, along with gold caps so yes, I have had teeth issues. It makes me VERY conscientious of my smile and I have never liked to openly smile, although everyone says I look better when doing such than when I try a "closed-lips" smile.
And the implants are terribly expensive. But from what I hear, once they heal, they are wonderful - more like real teeth than any prosthetic before. Some people do adjust very well to their dentures - my father has had upper plates since he was 21 as he had terrible teeth also - I told him that he gave me his shittiest genes that he had to offer!! LOL! But no one knows he has dentures, they are so natural. But when they wear out and he has to get new ones, they hurt and he has had to learn to put up with it until the "wear in" so to speak.
I do hope they find a cheaper way to do implants - before I die I would love to smile openly and not worry about my dark teeth. Luckily they were rather straight, so that is not an issue, but as I have lost so many my teeth are now spreading apart, leaving larger gaps and I don't care much for that.
As survivors I think that our appearance does matter, whether we are actually vain or not, we often need all the self-image help we can get as so often we do not see ourselves in the positive light that others may. I guess I am hoping that some firm will realize that implants are so much cheaper in the long run, because they do not break or wear out like dentures.
I will be watching this post to see if others have options I am unaware of. Thanks for posting it - good to see you back on the forum again. Had not seen much from you lately, may be my oversight though!

I can only really chew on one side.
LIke moonface, I was at one stage given some partial dentures to wear. I couldn't stand the feeling of them. I dread losing more teeth!
Going to the dentist creates the most anxiety for me as far as doctors are concerned. Plus, I'm finding that I don't trust the "chain" operations--you know, a dentist that opens a lot of offices.
I had no dental care as a child. In fact, my first visit to a dentist was when I was 21. However, I did get some good teeth genes from my parents; I don't think my dad ever saw a dentist in his entire life of 65 years, nor my mom for that matter. They both died with a good set of teeth. I hope to do the same.
But, my older sister did not fare as well and had all her teeth pulled when she was only 18. The dentist was a quack. No ethical dentist would ever pull healthy teeth and though she had buck teeth, her teeth were healthy and should never have been pulled.
Dentist also need to tell clients that though implants are better than false teeth for most people, having successful implants depends on large part on the health of the bone and tissue in your mouth. Be sure to ask about that if you haven't already.
I know I could not do the tooth prostheses.

I would highly recommend the implant route. It is much better for your health in the long run. I really wish she had explained it to you properly!
I think, if you can manage it, that doing one at a time would be the best way for you. After each implant, celebrate how strong you are to face the phobia. I think it could turn out to be an empowering experience. I wish you the best of luck.
