Incest Survivors Support Group
Incest refers to any sexual activity between closely related persons that is illegal or socially taboo. Consensual adult incest is very rare. Incest between adults and prepubescent or adolescent children is a form of child sexual abuse that has been shown to be one of the most extreme forms of childhood trauma. If you or a loved one is a survivor of incest, join the group...

Milton Erickson, considered the father of medical hypnosis, had polio as a teen; it paralyzed his total body--all he could move were his eyes and mouth to barely speak.
One day his parents left him alone in the middle of his room, tied into a rocking chair so he wouldn't fall. But he longed to be closer to the window so he could see the farm and sunshine.
His chair began to rock slightly. Had his longing to be closer to the window stimulated body movements he had thought himself incapable of?
With this experience Erickson began to imagine moving. He searched his memory for sensations and images of the movements he had most enjoyed. One day when imaging these movements, he saw his fingers begin to twitch.
He continued these mental exercises as well as studying his baby sister who was just learning how to walk. He watched and he remembered.
According to Dr. Barrertt, "EVERY EXPERIENCE REAL, or IMAGINED, is remembered in sensory fragments. Erickson's awareness, persistence, and imagination changed his life.
Do you think survivors can advance their healing by adding their imagination to their arsenal of healing methods?
Can you imagine yourself as the person you want to be? Can you see yourself doing what you came here to do? Can you grow your self-awareness, develop persistence, and learn to replace the lies of abuse with the truth of who you really are?
What do you think?

Upon his departure, he remarked, "I am in many people’s pockets; no one will believe you." Have you ever grappled with the silence that follows sexual assault, where the perceived impossibility of being believed necessitates self-censorship?

Thank you Suza - this is inspiring.
I did this years ago with myself, seeing what I wanted to do in my life. Then it just started happening. People even told me I looked younger than when they first met me and that was one of my thoughts. I found that there is a point you hit that's almost like a test of ones will. It's when you're just about ready to give up on doing this, but if you continue through this point, then it starts to happen. The hardest part for most people is doubt, once you start to doubt you quickly build those "walls" and it just isn't going to happen then. You just have to believe and keep believing. Many of us already know one side of this, the easy side. We can easily "create" our own misery and it doesn't take all that much effort. Creating our own "heaven" in our lives is much harder and discipline is required, but totally achievable. Like I said I needed this reminder so it's time I started to change my thinking once again, after all, I have nothing to lose and so much to gain. Thanks Suz!
I also get a lot from guided imagery - those talks where you imagine you are on a beach, or somewhere, and then imagine all sorts of things are happening.
Now, this has nothing to do with abuse... but I used to use visualisation before musical performances to beat nerves. Same with interviews. Imagine yourself performing confidently and everything going brilliantly, and it will :)
Never saw it in quite this way, though! Thanks, Suz xx
Yes imagery really worked very well for me.
