Hysterectomy Support Group
A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus, usually done by a gynecologist. Hysterectomy may be total (removing the body and cervix of the uterus) or partial (also called supra-cervical). Although there are conservative alternatives, hysterectomy is performed for uterine fibroids, pelvic pain, pelvic relaxation, heavy or abnormal menstrual bleeding, and cancer.

Hello all,
I am 65 years and had a hysterectomy and oopherectomy (removal of ovaries) in 1981 and have been on estrogen since then--28 years! My doctor thinks I should taper off and get off the estrogen. I take a generic form of Ogen, Estropipate, .75 mg. per day, which is equal to .625 Ogen.
Has anyone successfully gone off estrogen? If so, I would love to know how you did it, dose wise, and were you successful in controlling side effects--vagina dryness, hot flashes, etc.
Thanx so much.

Hi!I was 12 yrs. old when I had my left ovary removed(1981).2 yrs. ago,I had my right ovary removed and a total removal of my uterus.A week after my operation my ob gyne advised me to take estrogen premarin to avoid side effects like skin dryness, hot flashes, etc but since taking estogen is sometimes harmful because it can cause cancer to some,i took it for just 3 months and told my ob gyne to stop it.several months after, I experience back pain were I undergone therapy for almost a month and palpitation and later found out due to thyroid problem.Im having regular checkup with my internal med but so far Im ok eventhough Im not taking estrogen.

I had a complete hysterectomy done my ovaries, my cervix and uterus even my fallopian tubes everything is gone. Its been just a few days past a yrs that I had this done. Anyways I'm 32 yrs old and I feel like I'm 90 the estrogen does nothing for me I don't see any difference on it. I still have hot flashes my skin is dryer than ever. I feel horrible. Whats the point of being on it when its not working.

I HAD A TOTAL HYSTO. 2 WEEKS AGO, SO I WOULD NOT BE HELPFUL. BUT MY MOM SHE IS 59 YEARS OLD,AND SHE HAD EVERYTHING REMOVED IN 1985 AND SHE WAS JUST TAKEN OFF OF THE ESTROGEN ABOUT 2 MONTHS AGO, AND SHE DID VERY WELL WITH THE SYMPTOMS WITH NO HELP FROM ANY MEDS. AND SHE IS DONE WITH IT NOW. I HOPE I HAVE BEEN HELPFUL, AND I KNOW YOU CAN DO IT. MUCH LOVE CARRI ANN

I had a complete hysterectomy 5 years ago at the age of 47 and started taking a low dose of Cenestin (estrogen) in the hospital. I never experienced a hot flash from that point on but did have other symptoms like wt gain, aging and little sex drive. This was primarily in the first year. I feel like overall the estrogen did what it was supposed to do. I am attempting to wean myself off of the estrogen so I have started taking it every other day. So far no hot flashes but a little more tired in the afternoon but I've only been doing it about a week.

I had a complete hysterectomy almost two years and haven't been on any estrogen because of cancer. I eat 75 mg of soy protein a day in mixes and protein bars to help with symptoms. Bone loss is my only concern with the estrogen and that is the only reason for the soy. I am 40 years old. I do have vagina dryness but there is alot of good stuff out on the market for that. You will be fine without it I know it. Just plan a month or so of adjustments. Okay I just remembered some sleep problems right after surgery. But only lasted a few months. Best wishes.....
