Hysterectomy Support Group

A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus, usually done by a gynecologist. Hysterectomy may be total (removing the body and cervix of the uterus) or partial (also called supra-cervical). Although there are conservative alternatives, hysterectomy is performed for uterine fibroids, pelvic pain, pelvic relaxation, heavy or abnormal menstrual bleeding, and cancer.

I had my laproscopic hysterectomy, vaginally assisted on the 8th of August for Endometreosis.. I kept my ovaries. For now. I'm still recovering and sore. I admit I have probably overdone it a few times which may have slowed healing. I ended up having withdrawals from the demerol, so I don't recommend it, however, it did control my pain, maybe too well.

Since I'm still sore and recovering I cannot say if the surgery was effect or not. I sure hope so, because I really would like to keep my ovaries. Letting go of my uterus somehow just felt WRONG. but I am ok with it. I have plenty of children and don't need any more.

Try not to overdo it. And follow the doctor's orders on "no sex" too! There's a lot of internal healing that needs to take place and you don't want to mess that up. Best to you in getting through this!

I hope you take it easy...When I was a kid, the protocol was to take 6 weeks of doing nothing during post op recovery... Healing was so much better than now....Less scar tissue build up, fewer fallen bladders...I hope your body adapts to losing the womb...You might want to check out bio-identical hormones...even tho you kept your ovaries..Best to you Jayzandra

Don't try to rush the healing. I'd have a good day, do laundry and clean, and then I'd be laid up in bed for the next week. Totally not worth it. And don't expect to heal quickly. I was having pain from it even at 3 months post-op, although obviously not nearly as much. I'm 9 months out now, and I feel so much better. I did keep one of my ovaries, so I had whacked out hormones for the first few weeks post op while my remaining ovary kicked back in. No problems at all with that part since then, though. Good luck, and rest up!

Thank you all for your replies. When I went to my one week post-op follow up he asked if I wanted more meds. I felt like if I said yes I'd sound like a junkie! So I asked how long do women typically hurt afterwards and he said 3 weeks. I was like THANK GOD. I so did not want to be on those pain meds for any longer than necessary. Well, it's 23 day post-op and I'm still pretty darn sore. I think the Demerol worked too well because I didn't feel ANY pain at all from the very next day after. I kept myself n bed-rest until the 1 week post-op appointment. But my fiance works graveyards and we each have 3 kids, and I don't really have anybody that can come over and help me, so taking it easy really isn't that much of an option for me. I am however resisting the urge to hoe the weeds the recent rains have brought, and that's thanks to the non medicated pain.
Fighting4change, the no sex for 6 weeks is SO hard!! UHG. LOL. But I really don't want to tear anything open, so there will be none of that. I will try and see if there is anyone available to help me out, but I'm not hopeful in that department. Thanks again! Talking to you guys really does help!

Ugh! I hope you do find some help... with my first set of surgeries... my kids helped me the most! good luck!!
