A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus, usually done by a gynecologist. Hysterectomy may be total (removing the body and cervix of the uterus) or partial (also called supra-cervical). Although there are conservative alternatives, hysterectomy is performed for uterine fibroids, pelvic pain, pelvic relaxation, heavy or abnormal menstrual bleeding, and cancer.

Hi all I am looking for advice, I have suffered yearts with my periods etc, after having ovarian cysts, endometriosis and now adenomyosis, I am waiting on the list for a hysterectomy. I suffer daily pain from a chroic illness and suffer daily pain anyway, but this feeling of constant period pain, its my whole pelvis back and all down my legs. on top of the pain i get everywhere else. my biggest worry at the  moment is because my uterus is verybulky due to the adenomyosis I have to have the total abdominal hysterectomy via abdominal surgery. I am worrie they will not be able to control my pain because i already take so many different pain relieving drugs. What do they usually give for pain relief? and how bad is the pain how long does it last, I am having the whole lot taken including cervix, so I am also going to go headlong into menopause, any advice?? thank you in advance.

I am not going to sugar coat it; you will probably be in extreme pain afterwards. I also suffer from chronic pain, fibromyalgia, and after my total hysterectomy, I was in an extreme flare for weeks. I was given morphine in the hospital and came home with dilaudid but everyone is different. I continued with my normal medications of Cymbalta and Flexeril, a muscle relaxer. For the menopause, I actually went on the Minivelle hormone patch two weeks after. It helps to control it. The plan is to wean down off it after five years. With all the added pain at first, I can still say it is the best thing that I had done. Like you, I had problems and getting rid of this monthly burden that put me in hell two weeks out of the month, was well worth it. This was three years ago and although I still have chronic pain, I am a much happier person! Good luck to you.

I had pretty bad pain right after too but it will go away in a couple of weeks. The soreness lasted for me about 3 weeks. It does get better every day. Just do things at a slow pace and do not over due the first few days. Pamper yourself. I had great support from Mom, a friend and the nurse at the drs office. They were great.
