Hysterectomy Support Group
A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus, usually done by a gynecologist. Hysterectomy may be total (removing the body and cervix of the uterus) or partial (also called supra-cervical). Although there are conservative alternatives, hysterectomy is performed for uterine fibroids, pelvic pain, pelvic relaxation, heavy or abnormal menstrual bleeding, and cancer.
I just had my total hysterectomy on May 7th, 2018. I am 47 and have always had painful periods, they only got worse as I entered into menopause. Before the surgery, I was looking forward to the agony being over, but I also had to deal with anxiety of such a major surgery. Now that I am 5 days out of surgery, I am starting to slowly learn about the changes my body is showing. Hot flashes, trouble sleeping, anxiety and no appetite. Healing has been good, which I am happy about, but there are a lot of unknowns, which scare me. As for packing for the hospital, mine was outpatient. Just be sure to take comfortable clothes, things you can get in and out of easily, including your shoes. I hope that helps.
