Hysterectomy Support Group

A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus, usually done by a gynecologist. Hysterectomy may be total (removing the body and cervix of the uterus) or partial (also called supra-cervical). Although there are conservative alternatives, hysterectomy is performed for uterine fibroids, pelvic pain, pelvic relaxation, heavy or abnormal menstrual bleeding, and cancer.

Hi Everyone
I'm schueld for Oct 5th to have a hyster, I have a prolapse. I have a very physical job where lifting up to 50 pds is required. I have been preparing as much as possible for my recovery time, and will have 4 to 6 weeks off work. Putting things and people in place so I can relax and recover. Glad to have found this group.

Hi. Sorry to hear this. Did you by chance consider being fitted for a pessary so you can keep your uterus and its non-reproductive (anatomical, sexual, and hormonal) functions? Or you could have the uterus suspended just like they suspend the bladder when it is prolapsed. Unfortunately, most gynecologists treat the uterus as if it is only for having babies when that is untrue. Hysterectomy, ovary removal, and c-section are the most overused surgeries.

I had a hysterectomy over 9 years ago and it has caused a whole new set of problems including shifting / descent of bladder, bowel, and vagina. I will not go into the rest of the details here. You can read them in my full profile if you want.

I had a hysterectomy almost 16 years ago and life has been great. I did have hot flashes and mood swings but bio-identical patches worked very well.
At the time I had the surgery, I wasn't working but went to work about 3 months later. Be careful when you go back and ask for help if possible. It is a major deal after all. Your co-workers should be helpful. I'm trying to help out a co-worker lately because she is going to have cataracts removed. She is 80 and I think a bit worried. I'm telling her to take it easy too.

I had a total hysterectomy this past March. Life had never been better for me. I was post menopausal already but went on a very low dose of estrogen after my 6 week check up. I am doing very well with it. Be careful with your recovery. 50 lbs is a lot and you will want to be sure it isn't too much. Be sure you talk to your doctor about it and that when you go back, you don't hurt yourself. I wasn't allowed to lift anything besides groceries for 6 weeks.

I know some here have had a problem post hysterectomy but that has not been my experience. I hope you have a very positive experience all said and done. Please keep us posted on how you are doing and if we can help in any way by sharing our experiences and any tips or tricks we discovered.

Sorry to hear this Stressed. I see you are only 24...awfully young to be having this major, damaging surgery. Do you have endometriosis?
