I haven't paid off the LAST huge bunch of bills yet and I am in debt from the high deductible on last year's policy plus the out-of pocket expenses for the absolutely necessary treatments that my insurance company does not "cover."
With the high deductible plan, not only do I have to remit a co-pay every time I see the doctor, but I then have to reimburse him/ her for the amount of the insurance company's contracted rate! So - if my co-pay is $50 just for one office visit, I will end up remitting an additional $112 for the contracted rate - until I have spent a total of over $3,000 to satisfy the deductible!!!!
After I have spent over $3,000, I have the great privilege to pay ONLY $50 every time I see the doctor....
I give up.
I am canceling the next appointment with the functional medicine guy who put me on the herbs that messed up my cortisol levels but I will continue to ask him to send in the prescription for the slow-release T3 that I get from the compounding pharmacist.
I am going back to my primary care physician for my annual "wellness" exam in October and will get my "frees" tested and that is that.
"They" have won.
I earn 6 figures. I live in NYC. I have a fairly decent but FAR, very far from extravagant lifestyle. I did EVERYTHING right! And I am broke and sick.

I guess there's no chance that you could get on a better insurance plan? Big hugs - I'm so sorry it's been so expensive and frustrating.
That does not mean that I will not - that any of us will not - be able to live creative, productive lives - but it does mean that we have to deal with our Loss of our vision of ourselves as healthy people.
Like many of us "here," I have done all the right things throughout my life to be healthy and productive. So this is a huge Surprise that I am not able to process very well in an emotional sense.
In the past, NOT going to the gym for a heavy workout meant that I was slacking off and giving in to laziness. It takes a huge revolution in my thinking to understand that I CANNOT do what I used to do, and I am grieving for my understanding of who I always thought of as "me."
It helps me so much to know that all of you are going through this with me. I feel a lot less alone.
