Thyroid test results normal. What's missing ?

Hello,


All the symptoms of Hypothyroidism match how I feel for many many years. I thought of checking thyroid levels again. Dr says they look fine. Could someone please post their thoughts/recommendations?

HI cine_tech, it seems that your T4, T3, TSH are within normal range. Your thyroid peroxidase antibodies are also within normal range. Is there a reason why thyroid antibodies are ordered? Have you been suspected of having Hashimoto? If you have been suspected with thyroid diseases, then the condition(s) may develop overtime even though your thyroid function test looks normal for now. Your endocrinologist may have to monitor the progress of your thyroid function over time.

Hi Andromeda8, I did those tests as I have been having most of the symptoms of hypothyroidism for a very long time. This time also the thyroid test came normal so I tested my urine iodine. That came below normal value (32.7mg/dl) so I've started iodine supplements. I'll also do my reverse T3 which should complete my full Thyroid panel test. Over the years, I've been prescribed anti depressants, adhd meds but I'm really surprised the doctor thou5of checking my iodine with symptoms like fatigue, depression, cognitive issues, etc.
The only thing is my urine is smelling like iodine since I started my supplements. Maybe its initial side effects. Will monitor that with urine test strips.

HI cine_tech, certain antidepressants can cause hypothyroidism. I note that you have not indicated what kind of anti-depressants that you are taking. For example, tricyclic anti-depressant binds to and complexes with free iodide, therefore reducing biological active iodine in the body. SSRI can reduce T4 level to induce rare incidences of hypothyroidism. Perhaps your doctor may have to rule out the possibility of drug-induced hypothyroidism before diagnosing the actual disease.

My endocrinologist advises me not to take iodine supplements because too much I2 supplementation may cause inflammation of the thyroid gland or thyroid cancer. Perhaps you should ask your endocrinologist to find out the purpose for his test and proposed treatment (if any). Last year, I caught COVID and my T3/T4 levels were reduced, and would not normalise until I recover from the coronavirus.
