Hypothyroidism Support Group
Hypothyroidism is the disease state caused by insufficient production of thyrohormone by the thyroid gland. There are several distinct causes for chronic hypothyroidism, the most common being Hashimoto's thyroiditis and hypothyroidism following radioiodine therapy for hyperthyroidism. Advanced hypothyroidism may cause severe complications, the most serious one of which is...
I did take Melatonin for about 6 months. I recently read that it is a dopamine antagonist so I have stopped. I heard that Melatonin causes or exacerbates restless leg syndrome so am trying without it. I don't know what to call my shakes or tremor or numbness.
I don't often have trouble sleeping just during dose changes for about 3 weeks n and off depending on my cycle. I find titration difficult. I take gravel and hope I can sleep when I have to go to work.
Here to hoping a better year is around the corner.
Sorry to hear about your ongoing issues!
If you find that you still have symptoms after being on your new Erfa dose for 4 wks. or so, it would be a good idea to get labs and take a good, hard look at your FT4 level.
While many people feel good on desiccated thyroid products such as Erfa, others taking them find that they need a little T4 (thyroxine) to eliminate any residual symptoms.
Most people feel best when their FT4 and FT3 levels are closer to the high end of the range.
Based upon your lab's ranges, this means FT4 at least 18 or higher and FT3 at least 5.75 (and possibly higher). These levels would be without meds in the system.
Starting progesterone could very well affect your thyroid levels (in a positive way).
I think it would be prudent to get thyroid labs done before starting it and maybe hold off on any thyroid meds dose adjustments until you get thyroid labs done after being on progesterone for around 4 wks.
No matter what, best wishes moving forward and Happy New Year!!
After 3 weeks of going from 105 erfa to 120 erfa my numbers are:
FT4 14 (10-22)
Tsh 0.13
FT3 4.8 (3.5-6.5)
I have had a backwash of symptoms; the vibrations tingling and numbness are worse. My heart rate goes up at bedtime . On day 2 my heart rolled over in my chest( Very scary) probably a pre ventricular contraction. I am slightly hot. I have trouble falling asleep.
Symptoms lessened: seem less tired, anxiety has lessened, I am no longer cold although my extremities are sensitive to cold.
The private pay GP has added progesterone cream. I got blood work after only 3 weeks because I wanted to start this asap. I will hold on 120 erfa for another 4 weeks and test. Also added was a soil based probiotic and glucosamine supplement. ( I am on 14 supplements now)
This Gp believes that thyroid disfunction is related to adrenals and I put out too much cortisone when stressed so I need to cool things down before I can expect response from thyroid medication. She also thinks my liver is slightly off because ferritin saturation is high normal.
She however does believe in T3 only therapy and would willingly stop all other thyroid medications and start cytomel 2.5 twice a day. I asked her about simply increasing all meds until at 70% FT4 and FT3 she said no that the meds would not be let into my cells so my symptoms wouldn't improve. She does not believe FT4 has any function other than storage. ( I believe a low FT4 results in hair and mental disfunction which I already have)
I dont see my endocrine Doc for another 3 months. As all endos, he will be concerned my TSH has bottomed out. He may fire me as a patient if I dont drop my dose.
My plan is to reassess in 4 weeks and then possibly add straight t4 if needed.
Please tell me what you think. I appreciate all feedback and welcome differing opinions.
I think you recognize that your FT4 level needs help.....and your FT3 level would have many people feeling good (if accompanied by an appropriate FT4 level).
It's possible you need more time to adjust to your new dose but I definitely agree with your thoughts about adding thyroxine in 4 wks. if labs continue to show the need...../especially since it's good to see what effect the progesterone might have on your labs.
Such a delicate balance....
Best of luck to you moving forward!!
You give me hope...
