I have just been diagnosed with thyroid ism and given a low dosage of synthroid 25 mg. I haven't started taking it. I have been reading on other websites that this medication will cause weight gain. I am already overweight I cant afford to gain more!! Help, can someone share their experience/advise! Please....
Some people need T3 in addiction to synthroid, if the T4 is unable to convert to T3.
You will go back in 6 to 8 weeks for more testing, and make sure you tell them you want the Ft4 and Ft3. You will be able to see if your T4 is converting well.
This might take awhile to get on the right dose. I like my Ft4 to be in the upper 1/3 of the range as well as the Ft3 to feel good.

Some doctors might prescribe meds such as Synthroid but, not in high enough doses to rid the patient of thyroid symptoms - weight gain being one of many.
The best we can do is to make sure the doctor is running the tests that bm55 mentioned......and to also make sure that the doctor achieves for the patient the types of levels healthy people have - FT4/FT3 in the upper part of the range.
